Does anyone else have this problem?? Am I imagining it??

I have a 2001 HO 6spd with an Edge Juice W/Attitude. I'm also running a PSM cold air intake. The other day I was pulling around 8-9K lbs in 35-45 degree ambient temperature. At highway speed, my intake air temperature was around 94-96 degrees. I really felt like at lower engine speeds 1600-1900 I had too much timing. I don't know how to describe it other than it sort of felt like a slight miss. My fuel pressure was steady at 18-19 psi and I didn't notice it at higher engine speeds. I wish I had a way to adjust the timing on the fly to see what difference it made. I really don't have a good baseline for comparison since last winter I was running the stock clutch with a K&N intake. I couldn't use very much power with the stock clutch and I would assume that the K&N would have higher intake air temps, although without pulling the same load at the same power level, over the same path... etc, there's just no way to know. I really like my JWA, but right now I'm wishing for adjustable timing.

I had what I thought was a miss but it was a surging problem but that was using the Adrenaline. Quad fixed it but I am not sure it was a timing problem. If it was maybe others here know for sure and relate that information to your JWA.

The HO engine has advanced timing compared to the SO. Adding timing with a box should be done carefully if towing.

If you have 3. 55 gears and 315/75 tires you want RPMS higher 1800+ 2000 is better

HO do have more timing and higher compression. You can always turn off the JWA and see if the miss goes away, but if you are under a load you need higher RPMS, even with 4. 10. My truck likes above 2000 RPM when towing and going up a grade. The MPG difference is not worth the extra stress on the engine and drive-train. Check out the TDR magazine and you will see the Brake specific Horsepower (fuel consumption vs. HP) is nearly the same from 1600-2100RPM

Could be the APPS? I have come to believe that the APPS is the culprit behind a lot of different symptoms on our trucks. Swap an APPS from a manual transmission truck that doesn't have that symptom and see if it repeats.

My '02 had a tendency to display a random. erratic "miss", "bucking", or cutting out when first starting out under load in cold near freezing temps - very noticeable when towing the 5th wheel RV.

This effect would disappear as engine and ambient temps increased, and was not a problem in warmer temps. Mine also had a noticeable timing "rattle" under low RPM load when I had the Smarty programming loaded - but was never an issue with the Edge Comp - I eventually dumped the Smarty, use only the Comp, and no more rattle.

I am also now running a spare ECM I picked up a while back, and haven't noticed any more random missing in cold temps - but haven't towed, either, so dunno if a combination of events has eliminated or reduced timing related issues - just glad they seem to be gone!

I know this is an old thread. I have 275's and an edge EZ and on level 3 in winter it runs like crap. Just what you guys (very few people online) have experienced. I've been chasing problem and I can't find a single thing to cause this so I would chalk it up to too much timing as well. If I take tuner off it doesn't do it. Wonder if I should move to the edge comp?
