On stock power my truck is fine, but with the SMARTY at level one it is smoky when accellerating. On level three or five it is just plain embarrasing..... the smoke just billows from the tailpipe regardless of how easy I roll in to the accellerator pedal. Gigantic clouds of black smoke at half throttle are not my idea of performance or keeping up good public relations on behalf of the diesel driving community. The problem is especially noticeable when accellerating out of a corner after slowing in to the turn. This has been going on for some time now ( 4-6 months)... . what's the deal?

there has been and continues to be , many posts about this issue. Both with the Smarty and Smarty JR. there IS some beta software, so maybe do a search on this website and Dodge Cummins forum before starting a new thread. Thanks I'll do the research. I am also going to reinstall the EDGE juice/ attitude and see if this is an issue exclusive to the SMARTY or if my truck is having other fueling/air supply issues. Even at higher elevation (5000 ft)the EDGE would only smoke on level 5.

Smarty observations.

I'm running the 4. 14 defaulted program on sw#1 on my '07 w/2000# on my back. I've got 285's,a g-56 and PG7 dropin with psm snorkel. A low restriction muffler about tops it out. With this program currently installed I get a minimal trail of smoke if I drive it for economy upon acceleration. I upped the r. p. a notch but got minimal improvement in the smoke dept. My buddy's Juice w/o attitude will smoke pretty good upon hard acceleration and he's constantly cleaning the rear quarter panel. He's got an '05 w/auto and 1000# camper and 285's. The Juice came off today and he'll be trying a recently acquired Smarty. It'll be interesting to see how it works out. P. S. How's the air quality up there? Pray for the courageous firefighters. They're fighting to save the homes of others that they'll never be able to afford. Quality people.

When I got the new injectors, mine had a heavy haze under accel towing up a big grade. When I installed the CFM+ intake, I have ZERO smoke under all conditions and I've even towed with the Smarty REVO on Level 1 and still no smoke.

I personally think the CFM+ or the ATS intake manifolds are worth the cost and effort. They decrease EGTs, improve HP and Torque (see Erik @TVP's post) and they reduce smoke for me...

Louis

Hey Paddy,

Some good reading on that here. I been following it thinking about the Smarty Jr. Mine is all stock except for a cam and I have been noticing some pretty good black puffs when getting into the throttle.

I drained my fuel filter housing, dumped in a bottle of this stuff and installed a new filter- cleaned up the pipe pretty good so maybe some injector deposits along with your added downloader??

Thanks, Matt. I think I will load up the latest updates for the SMARTY and start there first.

Bajabob-no structures have gone up yet and the air up here is really clear. If the winds remain calm the homes and owners in the Goleta foothills may get away unscathed. The air tankers are hammering that fire pretty hard.

Matt,

Not to hijack this thread but I read on the forums that Sea Foam will harm your truck. They said there is something caustic in it that will damage your injector pump.

I had not heard of that, do you recall where you read that?

edit Now I see now where some say its bad but IMO its like carb cleaner, you wouldn't want to run your gas engine on the stuff all the time but it does wonders to give a quick clean up when added to the filter housing. I wouldn't use it in the tank as a regular additive, though they say its fine for that.

Paddy- Please post back on how the latest software does for you.

The issue is SeaFoam has alcohol in it so it is supposed to be tough on the fuel system. I have used it in the past pouring it into the housing with no ill effects, but I don't anymore.

I'm having the same problem. Any setting with the Smarty produces a lot of smoke, even the timing only, Stock TQ managament. I have the ATS manifold and Blade Runner, still SW 3 is ridiculous with smoke. I don't understand why a timing only program produces a good bit of smoke, unless it changes the fuel curve, then it isn't timing only:confused:. I just spend a good chunk of change on a DTT and turbo to run more hp and I'm at stock power now b/o the smoke.

Do you guys have the latest beta software version? I just got my Jr from Bob about a week and a half ago and have very little smoke unless i goose it hard before the turbo lights.

try the revo software... I have that and it was night and day difference with the smokiness. I also have flux 1s in the mix now and it still does not smoke nearly as bad as it did with the older smarty programs... . Right now i am running timing at 4 and everything else set to 0 and its pretty sweet granted i have an aftermarket turbo but i have seen drastic improvements over original smarty with the garrett

I found some interesting reading about that here: Diesel Timing and while that info is not focused on the ISBe, it does shed a little light on the subject.
Unfortunately it is more complicated than just basic timing when dealing with multiple injection events per power stroke. Here is the link I posted in another REVO thread that sheds some light on this: http://www.tytlabs.co.jp/english/review/rev373epdf/e373_009hotta.pdf

It details how the timing of the pilot injection event needs to change in relationship to the timing of the main injection event based on engine load. If you read nothing else, at least read the “Abstract” paragraph on the first page of the PDF document, it will be better than my trying to paraphrase it accurately.
