I'm looking for a toolbox for a short bed that will still let me fit plywood flat in the bed. I ordered a SteelHorse Saddlepack box, but it was flimsy, cheesy plastic. They used to make an aluminum version, but don't anymore. It basically ran the length of the bed under the rails and even with the wheel well. I need to store chains, tie downs, tools, etc. Thought about a rollup cover, but still would need some boxes. I carry motorcycles often, so really need most of the bed space. Tractor supply and sears sell smaller boxes with drawers that fit behind the fenderwells, but with the boxes on both sides, you're about 1" shy of fitting a 48" wide sheet of plywood. Sears now has a top-opening little box for in front of the wheel wells. These are looking like my best option, but haven't seen them, or seen a truck with them. I've seen the company that cuts the bed and transforms the sides into boxes that open out. Very cool, but at $4-5,000, not an option!

Any other ideas???

Chris,

I have a Pro Tech aluminum box that goes from bed rail to bed rail, fits against front of the box, and is about 18 inches or so deep, leaving plenty of room for plywood, etc. Flimsy it ain't! They are spendy, at nearly 600 clams for polished aluminum (as opposed to diamond plate). The only thing better would be stainless steel... ... .....
