Hi everyone,

Broke everything else loose, can't turn that top 10 mm bolt. Wow it's tight, should i put some heat on it like map gas or something already broke a 10mm socket the others i tapped loose with a small brass mallet and a wrench.

That one is to tight to swing a hammer, any ideas would be great, thank's.

To get mine off, I used a long handled 12pt wrench with a big cheater bar over it. One whack is all it took. It's definitely a bear though...

I don't know that I would recommend heat...

Mine were all backed out of the holes by 1/4". I didn't even know it until I went to loosen the battery cable and the whole starter wobbled around.

Get a 10mm combination wrench grind the open end off and use a pipe nipple on box end (12 point) For a cheater works like a champ also good for reinstalling so it wont back off.

A good friend came over with the right 12 point 10mm 1/2" racket qrack it was loose thank's every one now i just have to fix it or change it.

I would recommend fixing it. Probably just needs a new solenoid plunger and contacts. The remans don't seem very reliable these days... #@$%!

So i eventually got it off,I took it apart i had already brought a LarryB's #R 90 SS from Geno's for about $24. 00 I took out the plunger and removed the contacts I used a 17mm open wrench on the outside nuts and a 14mm to hold the one contact when i was tightening back up. Cleaned all the inside from dust etc. The contacts are alot bigger making really good connections the truck starts really great, really strong. The one old POS contact was as thin as my finger nail I think that what was making it hang up and keep running sometimes until the starter failed to start.

AGSmith, that's exactly why the starter and engine kept running. Mine did that when my first contact wore out but when the second wore out it just clicked ( the starter finally died earlier this month).

NAPA carries brand new starters for under $200 and has over-sized contacts in it.

I have a set of the over-sized contacts but there was more go inside my starter than just contact wear. It looked like a cheap reman was put in at some point.

One thing to consider while doing starter repairs is to examine the condition and quality of the starter cable and cross over cables on the batteries. For that matter all the cables that touch the batteries. Time is not friendly to electrical systems.

I recommend against NAPA, or any other chain parts store starters and power steering pumps, unless you like taking advantageof the lifetime warranties. You will get very good at changing them out if you own the truck for awhile and put a lot of miles on it. Murphy will always make sure that the cheap part will fail when you are as far from home as possible also. A new Denso starter or a new Saginaw power steering pump will give you more years of service than you will probably own the truck, unless you are me of course:-laf I learned my lesson with PS pumps, five in one year. I didn't make the same mistake with the starter.
