After installing the Power Edge EZ box and pulling my 11,000 lb. 5th wheel trailer I started having tc slippage from 4th into OD lockup and from and from 3rd into lockup. I was told that I needed to replace my tc with a heavey duty tc with a machined billet, such as the ones sold by ATS and Sun Coast. If you were replacing your tc which one would you go with? Any help will be appreciated.

You need a valve body with more line pressure and with a trailer that heavy and RV injectors you need or will soon, a torque converter. And a 98 probably has enough mileage to work over all the rest of the clutches also.

Bill Kondolay has a cracker jack installer down there in Texas. Someone will pop in and reveal his name.

Do *something* about that slippage IMMEDIATELY - before you spread burn lockup clutch particles thruout your entire AT fluid system - creating still MORE problems even after you upgrade/repair your transmission!

The "crackerjack" DTT installer in Texas that we know of is James Northum, he's a good man, a TDR member, and by all accounts, a heckuva mechanic. Email me, and I'll send you his email address. Or you can contact Bill Kondolay to get his phone #.

James put in my transmission upgrades for me. I had to drive further than you would, though. He's a heck of a good guy, does good work and he's fast. If you want to pm him on the boards, his tdr handle is inarush76

All I can say is my DTT transmission and Torque Converter is still going strong even when pushed with over 750HP.

My ATS TC and VB has been flawless. There are several good vendors of upgraded transmission parts. Make some calls and get the one that fits your needs best.

Yeah, what StakeMan says. Texas is a ways from Colorado, but several members on here have driven big distances to get an ATS installed at the ATS shop itself in Denver. Their stuff can be installed by a transmission shop that you trust, near you.

Like he says, make some calls, check around. I prefer ATS, I'm an authorized installer for them. I've seen what the ATS setup can do in high horsepower applications, and heavy towing at stock power levels, and I like it.

Thanks for the Kudos

Thanks WyoJim,BriarHopper,Danandme for the kind words.

BTiner, are you going to be at the Dallas club meeting this coming weekend the 12th? I will try to answer any questions you may have concerning an upgrade on your truck. Or email me your number and I'll give you a call if you want to talk before then. There a number of club members I have upgraded trannies for, I bet any one of them would let you ride/drive their truck. Hope to see you there.

transmission Upgrades

I recommend a DTT VB and TC upgrade plus a DTT Smart Box to give you good control of lock up in 2, 3rd and OD.

Just ask the vendors why their Torque Converter needs or doesn't need the billet cover. Also ask if their stator is steel, billet or just the stock stator milled.

If you do the research I think you will be surprised.

Actually should I go the ATS route, I will be driving to Kentucky to get Briar Hopper to do the install. :D If I go DTT, then it will be James. :D

BT,

Since you will be replacing something, a 5 or 6-speed swap may also be an option, as it would be cheaper in the long run, and you will get the power to the ground.

The slushbox guys have way to many issues, the shifter guys get a clutch and go, no other gripes.

They only gripe when they get beat at the track. LOL

local installation

I can attest to the fact that a local shop can install the ATS converter and valve body as that is what I did. The shop that did mine had never worked with ATS before but the installation went without a hitch. By getting the valve body too, you have the ability to lockup in all gears if you want to. I am not sure of the others, but I can go from 4th lockup to 3rd lockup now, which you can not do with the stock setup. This is a nice feature if you see a big hill directly ahead. In my opinion you will never find a more solid lockup than in the ATS... ... ... ... ..... and without having to run sky high pressures as do most of the others.
