Chris,Im not doubting you hit 280,but I plowed this winter for 20 hrs at a time, going no more than 10-15 mph, with a 3500 lb Vbox spreader on the back, and a 980 lb 9'2" plow on the front pushing snow, sometimes wet and heavy and the highest i hit all winter was 210 hot line, the average temps ran 155-175 hot line plowing,When i hit 210 i was jockying back and forth for 10 minutes,in and never went more than 150 ft,doing tight pushing. I did this with a stock trans pan, cooler, and the 89% TC. i have never had a stiuation where i have been over 210,since then. I know the temps in winter werei nthe 30;s but the conditions were much more severe,IMo. . What gear was the truck in while you were going up the hills? It sounds like it was in 2nd,and should have been held in 1st,this would have reduced the convertor slippage, and dropped the temps. In your case there isnt a tc out there that would have helped you stay under 280,without driver intervention(manually locking it in lockup or holding it in 1st gr. For best performance therer are times times we need to step in and put these trannys in the right gear,I think this was one of those times. By design they shift too soon,up to 3rd. and this can only be raised so much before you start to have bad side effects like hunting,or late shifts empty.

Took my drawers off

That way they can't get bunched. :D

Stakeman: I know there are some who want the lock-up, and ofcourse cruising down the Interstate so do I. It really helps in the exhaust brake mode also.

I have the DTT Smart Controller and it does unlock according to throttle position. That is the first thing that I do when going up a large hill towing is to unlock the t/c; it's like kicking in the AB on a jet:D .

The big advantage FOR ME is the "box". It gives a lot more control over the t/c and lets me tow much faster and cooler:rolleyes: Hill that a year ago I went up in 2nd and GV, I can now go up 3rd direct, unlocked.

Why are the flame shields out? A lively discussion produces results! After all, "they'finally posted some pressure numbers. Oo.

I hope this thread can continue in a good hearted way. It has been a good discussion thus far.

I have a BD torq-loc to hold lockup. I only use it for engine breaking. The factory lock up points are fine for me with the 4. 10 gears.

I left it in second until the temp got to 220, then I put it in first and the temp just kept on climbing. The reason for leaving it in second was that after asking Bill, he said that it was harmful to the transmission to keep it in first or second because of the shift overlap. I have absolutely no idea why shift overlap would have anything to do with that because it’s not shifting if I am holding it in one gear. But I figured that holding it in first was better than frying the thing. I really wish I had listened to Bill and gotten the 89%. I think that even though it slips more in a situation like this, it would run cooler because the fluid isn’t being sheered as much.

Thanks

BTiner, danandme's post is a good synopsis of what is available for us [fortunate] auto-trans owners. You have a few options, and I would highly suggest driving several trucks with the various different setups in them to see which one feels right for you.

Snow Man, thanks for the informative reply. So there really wasn't anything more I could have done at Muncie to get my truck with it's current mods into the 13 second bracket. Good!! I feel better now.

I guess it's time to check the bank account to see if I can afford the 13 second bracket!:D

Rob: You're Still FOS! My truck was on the trailer behind your transmission challenged truck because of a no start problem, not because of the transmission!

However: Steve's truck was behind my [auto trans] truck BECAUSE of his stickshift trans problems!! :{

And yes the trusty minivan continues to provide transportation for us unfortunate enough to be without our Cummins. BTW: it's an automatic too! Thankfully I had to drive it only two days.

Be nice, or I won't loan you the minivan when YOU need it!! :D

As far as the Auto equipped truck owner who's truck [at high altitudes] doesn't have enough power to pull a greased string out of a cat's a**, the owner of that truck won't listen to the advice of the vendors selling him products, or the advice of very experienced TDR members. So his truck is set up all wrong, [because he did it HIS way] So don't blame the transmission, blame the owner.

As far a sled pulling goes, the best pullers may be stick shift trucks, but I seem to remember several pretty good pulls at Muncie by auto equiped trucks. :D :{

Next round: to Rob

Hey snow man- could you please do me a favor? Put your truck in gear and don't let it go anywhere. Note how long it takes the temp to go from 180 to 220 and exactly where the rpm is at in gear. This is how my truck gets hot most of the time. I would appreciate it very much!

Chris

CC: I'm not certain or sure, so don't let anyone else see this:rolleyes: Did Bill K say holding it in gear or shifting manualy 2-3. Something about it not being ready for third or something and jamming third (?).

Was you running locked or unlocked in 2nd? You need a smart box bad.

280, wow.

Chris my truck hasnt hit 180 in over a month, ill have to sit in the driveway, and hold it in gear for a few minutes. I cant do it now,my kids/and tenants would be happy with my CTD running outside at 11pm:D . I promise ill do it tomorrow. Ive never been above 210 hot line, ever,so its going to be a while. I hope my temp sender is accurate ,so far every morning it reads with 1 degree of outside temp when i turn on the key to fire it up,so i thought i was right. Also i have the high idle reflash which ups the idle to 875,this heats the trans up much quicker,in fact its tough to hold the truck back sometimes. In low range i pulled a chevy out of a ditch simply by putting it in gear:D ,and letting it idle.

I was unlocked in second and first. One thing that confuses me is how come my transmission can't survive unlocked when the older ones didn't even have lockup tc's? Did they just fry the transmission or what? Why can't mine do this in fluid coupling without going Chernobyl?

Perhaps Bill just meant manually shifting it, but I specifically made the example of just holding it in gear for doing EXACTLY what I did this last weekend and he said no.

BD transmission products on Steakman's truck? If only I would have known this earlier I could have pushed harder to sweet talk you into my used BD TC & VB. :D

Put mine in drive, held the brakes. 80° outside (after driving home from work).

Took 5 minutes for the temp to climb to 210°. Then I got tired of sitting outside with the truck running at 645am.

I am commonly around 180° with all my in town driving. My gauge stops at 250° and I honestly have never seen it higher then 220°, even when racing in 90° heat multiple runs back to back.

You must be talking about EGT's because transmission temps in fluid coupling will be warmer than lockup.

Chris,I just got home,i didnt do the test today to tell you the truth,i know it would be at least 5 minutes,I have never hit more than 210,like i said,I havent hit more than 190 since febuary. in the 80-95 degree weather weve had,my truch rund at 147-157 hotline in lockup on the highway, and 150-165 in traffic in fluid coupling, unless im stopped for a while,,then i pop it in N anyway. Thanks Kat for doing the test, since you have the 91,its probably a more accurate test anyway.

Thanks for doing the tests!

Kat- What was the temp when you started? What was the rpm in gear?

Snow man- what was your rpm in gear? Do you have an 89 or a 91?

Thanks again.

After working all night I couldn't remember what all you asked for.

The starting temp was right around 160° or so. I'd have to look again.

I'll have to check the RPM next time I hop in the truck.
