I am having problems with that torque converter locking and unlocking. At a steady speed the torque converter will unlock and lock up quite frequently. It will do this until speed is brough up. Usually this will happen at around 1200 1300 rpms and in either od or direct drive which is usually around 35 to 40 in direct drive and 50 in overdrive. I have checked battery connections and cleaned them up, trans fluid is good, not burned, correct level and truck has a new apps. Does anyone have any ideas? Help!!!!

This is a common problem that has been posted about dozens or hundreds of times on this site . do a search on converter locking and unlocking you will have more reading than you can possibility handle. There is a service bulltin that covers some of the problems, companies that have a noise filter, others have a wiring change, and wraping the ground wire from the alternator to the rh fender with alumium foil. Hope this is some help. I have had the computer flash and the noise filter which fixed mine.

From what I've read here on the forums, some believe AC voltage or "noise" coming from the alternator might be the cause of the TC lock-unlock problem and have reported simply replacing the diodes in the alternator solved the problem. If you don't want to try and replace the diodes yourself, you may want to consider buying a new high quality alternator (as opposed to a low-quality rebuild) to insure you won't have a unit which has excessive AC noise right out of the box.

Electrical noise filters may indeed help eliminate the TC lock-unlock problem for awhile, but some have reported it ultimately comes back... presumably when the AC noise from the alternator gets worse.

Good luck,

John L.

Well I left the batts unhooked overnight and the issues went away. So I am going to bring my ecm to work and flash it withthe newest software and see what happens after that but right now it is working fine.

You mean flashing the *PCM* right? The PCM controls the transmission.

What equipment does your work have to flash an ECM or PCM off the vehicle?

Check this site out. I have tried all the wire arounds and foil cleaning grounds then I found this site and paid the $13. 00 purchase and there has been no lockup issues since. Each of the other fixes would last a while or a few days and come right back this one has kept the beast away for going on two years now and as an added plus my Torque Converter actually stays locked up down to about 1000 rpm then unlocks or unlocks when I hit the brake. Don't understand the last part but I am not going to complain. Dodge Ram Cummins 24V Truck Converter Clutch Cycling Repair.

I used the BD diesel fix, Its a wire tap that goes from the tps wire at the computer to ground. It cost $9 plus $10 shipping from Sacramanto to Los Angeles.

( i can't find the directions they sent) Here is an e=mail that I received from Bd Diesel.

I do have a dealer in Sacramento that could supply you with one, Ken Imler Diesel in Sacramento 916-920-3775

If you can’t get one in California just give me a call and I will send one out to you in the mail.

Thanks

There are two methods that make this easy to fix. One works most of the time which is the reflash 18-02-99 from Dodge. This is for erratic torque converter clutch operation. The second would be to put a noise filter on the apps wire. We sell hundreds of them and they are under $10.

the BD kit did the trick for me :D

We have a datalink connector that will hook up to the pcm and we can get the program from dodge to shove into it from our computer at work. We can get the program do to the fact that we work on dodge's and sterling bullets at our med duty shop.

I took alt the see if it was putting out "noise" and it was. I also installed a 30 amp noise filter and it hasn't done it in 4 months, only thing though I think 30 amps is too much because now it can take 10-15 seconds to finally lockup, but it doesnt shift in and out anymore. Maybe try a 20 amp noise filter
