My stock clutch is starting to give up the ghost, and i need advice on an upgrade.

Truck is in my sig, and it's our daily driver, and we tow a 15,000 lb fifth-wheel about 5,000 miles a year.

Thanks in advance!

I went with a South Bend Con OFE, the complete kit including flywheel and hydraulics. So far I like it. Can be a bit grabby but after talking to Peter at South Bend I am getting along okay with it.

the south bend con ofe grabs or engages more solid than a stock. just start off in first gear for a smooth take off. you will get used to it in a little while. best clutch on the market

Ist gear starts are necessary with an OFE? That sounds like a PITA 1st is good for maybe 2 mph on mine. .

no it isn't necessary, I had an ConFE in mine and it was even worse than an OFE would be. I learned to not try to feather the clutch or I would have a rough engagement. The quicker you are off the clutch the smoother it is.

There's a good article in an old TDR, ( I think it's issue #56) on clutch replacement.

Bottom line was to stick with the OEM clutch. Good hint was to keep your foot OFF

the gas while engaging the clutch.

read the article (a good one btw)... problem is I pull a 16,000lb Fifth-Wheel, and am mildly Bombed... so stock isn't an option.

I used the con-o with that heavier pressure plate for towing, smooth engagement but the clutch would not disengage all the way. So then I bought the HD hydraulics for it, it was better but still shifts hard into 1st, 2nd and reverse, it just doesn't release all the way. I think it is to much pressure for the hydraulics. I would not do it again. I would use their clutch disc from the con-o with their stock rated pressure plate. I tow 16 to 18k most of the time. When you get stuck out on a highway in stop and go that is 3 miles long getting it in gear a 100 times starts to **** you off. When you see their disc you can see it's going to bite much better than the stock one did, and like someone said up top, do not step on the accelerator while releasing clutch. These motors can do it and the clutches will live longer. Good luck.
