Towing in OD

I have a 30' toy hauler & I do a lot of long hwy trips. Is there any thing that I can do to be able to tow in OD? I would love to upgrade my trany to be able to use more of the potiential of my TST but money & the wife say that must wait for now.

Why aren't you doing that now? If you are towing in the hills, then by all means lock out the OD, but on the flats I don't see any reason why you can't tow in OD.



Please give more info about your truck also.

My 5th wheel weighs over 11K. I've always towed in overdrive, unless hill and road conditions suggest otherwise. As long as you're not lugging or up and downshifting, you shouldn't have any problems.

Stock power towing with a 48 should not be much of an issue,but throw some of that tst at it and all bets are off.

Towed a 12000 lb trailer for 120k with a stock 98. 5 with the 47re trans. towed in overdrive all the way, except pulling hills. Now have a 06 with 48re do the same. Just think of it as a 4 speed and go . Downshift when you need more power. Oo.

As long as you can keep the RPMs over 2000, you have nothing to worry about, if you cannot keep them that high due to hills or speed limits just stay in 3rd.

i agree 3rd lockout is for the hills, once your on the flat let it go into 4th

Shortly after buying my '03, okay the same day, I went throught the owner's manual page by page. I wasn't happy with the sections on towing while in OD so I wrote a letter to the Minneapolis office. I got a telephone call about two weeks later. The guy told me to leave it in OD unless it was hunting and pecking. So that's what I've done. My 48RE has worked great towing. It's empty that this transmission gives me the creeps. Anyhow, I am not up near you guys and your weight. My heaviest is 9000 lbs TT. Just my . 02.

Thanks for the info. I have just herd a lot of bad thing about the auto trans & I can't aford to dust it just yet. Although that would give me a excuse to up grade
