After driving around for a few days with them on, mine aren't so bad. The electric adjust is fantastic feature to have. Backing my rv into the backyard, I have to work past gate posts, low planter walls and roof overhangs, with only five inches clearance on either side. This took numerous trips out of the cab to adjust the mirrors for all the obstacles. No more! If these were the price of the Powervision or Cipa's, it would be a different story, but for $200, they aren't bad. One thing that might be happening is that I had the factory tows on for ten years, got used to them and wasn't even paying attention to how much they vibrate. When I put the Kool-Vue's on, I may be looking for trouble, so to speak, because of the posts I have read regarding this issue. They are so easy to put on, I might just bolt one of the stockers back on for a day to see if there is that much difference between the two.

what I run in to, here, with wrecking yards, is that most don't want to separate the mirrors from the doors, and want 350-400$ per door...

I'm in need of tow mirrors, but do not have power ones, currently. would wiring up power mirrors in a no-power door be that much of a chore? I'm sure it's been done before.

$200 would be a comfortable price for tow mirrors, provided they're usable.

Rogan,
Go through the old posts and see if the wires are there for your truck, in my '01 the wires are there, or take a door panel off and look. on the driver's side there will be two plugs, one for the mirror and one for the control knob.
I don't know if the later mirrors fit a 96, the mirror most of us are talking about isn't listed as compatible with your truck.
The cool view mirrors are on sale at Discountmirrors.com for 86. 11 each, I got my control knob for $25 from a wrecking yard on ebay. I paid $50 for the HVAC control so I could take advantage of the heat option. other people have cut the wires off the harness going to the HVAC control and put a toggle switch on the dash for the heat option.
you will probably need the backer plate that goes on the inside of the door.
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU INSTALL NOT TO PINCH THE WIRES, most of the problems in the 21 pages of posts can be contributed to pinching wires.

Thanks, baxter. I've had the door panels off, before, and i do not recall seeing any unused plugs. My '96 is a base model with AC, and that's about it. It originally had those huge "west-coast" tow mirrors bolted to the door skins. I replaced those with some flag-style chrome ones from an '01 that bolt to the normal mirror spot (the three bolt-style). .
I know the door jamb boot only has 2 wires in it, for the speakers, and that's it. It's safe for me to say mine is not factory wired :(
But I'm not above wiring in power stuff, if it isn't a huge ordeal. I already have a power mirror switch that I scavenged from a junkyard trip back in January.

if you have the three hole 01 bolt pattern, get the backer plate and wire her up.
I'm sure someone can come up with the wiring pattern for the switch.

Anyone want a set of MOPAR 3rd Gen power/heated towing mirrors. Brand new in the box... . I bought them when I was doing a conversion on my second generation. I never got them put on. I sold the truck with the non-power/heated mirrors installed and have the 3rd Gen siting on a shelf for about 3 or 4 years... They are brand new.

Make me an offer... . I also have a set of power/heated sports mirrors for a second Gen truck. Used...

This quote is from post #235 of this thread. .

"Quick note if using the OEM Dodge mirrors for the conversion. There has been a change to the mirrors and they no longer will work for the conversion.

What has happened is that the original power mirrors that were an "AM" part number have been superseded by new mirrors with an "AO" part number. The new mirrors (AO) fit through the 09 model year as well as the 3rd gen trucks. However the bases from the 2nd gen non-power mirrors no longer will work with the new AO superseded part number mirrors. They look close but will not work. You can pick out the new style AO mirrors by the metal at the break away junction, if it is silver (unpainted) then it is an AO series, if it is black it is an AM series. You can really only see that metal junction if you pivot the break away. "

Which part number are they?

Sam

Mine are all black in the middle... . I guess that they are the AM part number then...

Part number 55077445AI REV A

Looks like they were built in November of 01

Like I said... brand new still in the Mopar Box

:)

Has anyone tried these? They have both Driver and Passenger. 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 2500 Truck Tow Mirror Power Heat L - AM Autoparts

I have them and for the money, they aren't that bad. They have a little more buzz in them the factory tow mirrors but are completely usable in my opinion. The convenience factor is huge, and not having to make the repeated steps of in/out of the cab to adjust the manual ones is not missed by me. They are not as clear as the power vision mirrors are, but they are not $500 either. Read this whole thread, lots of info in it.

For the controls you may have to start searching salvage yards. Try car-parts.com, do a search for interior misc and scroll till you find one with door panels and do some calling.
