Towing observation on the new GM HD's...

The weekend before Thanksgiving I was up at the Arctic Cat factory to pick up my new race sled (very cool, by the way). Since we were the last ones out of the bar the night before, we were the last ones to get in line the next morning for the sled hand outs. From this vantage point I could see combinations of all the diesels hooked to different trailers.



The worst by far was the new GM stuff. It looked funney to see a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a HD badge on it with the rear end sqatted down hooked to an EMPTY 3 place enclosed trailer. The older versions did much better. The stupor doodies did quite well as did the Dodges. The biggest rig there (except for the class 8's) was hooked to a class 5/6 tractor. The second biggest was hooked to a srw Furd SD short bed extended cab, makes you wonder sometimes...

You're lucky to have a sled. They wouldn't give us MN guys our's... . and guess what I still don't have either one of them. It's hopefully going to be at the dealer tomorrow... . I sure hope so, I'd like to ride it a little before the first race. Wow a Cat guy and a TDR member, gotta like that.

I picked up my 02 800 Mtn. Cat a few weeks ago and we finally have a couple of feet of new powder in the mtns. Come on weekend!!

I raced a 1999 Sno-Pro two years ago now I have

a 2001 Pro X 440 Polaris. We have a race up in

Sault Ste. Marie this weekend but its just for

practice so I doint think I will make it up there.

My first race this year will be in Gaylord Dec. 15

and 16. Good luck racing this year guys and hope

Another Cat guy here. Mostly boondocking and powder riding in Washington and Oregon. Main close riding area is Mt St Helens, great terrain!

My wife and I ride mod 98 Powder Special 600's. A few parts from Black Magic, mod tunnels, lightweight and custom machined parts really made these sleds scream.



And its snowing really hard in the mountains right now!

That's for all of you guys in the mountains with the snow. I'll be heading to Yellowstone in January when we have a 2 week break. If anyone sees purple sno pros with 2" tracks they're us. Oh yeah, they'd have a D&D or Black magic motor under the hood too.

Snow?!?!? We don't even have ICE yet! Thanksgiving weekend we can usually do a little testing on the lake but I haven't even seen a frozen puddle yet.



As for the new sled, I almost didn't get mine. The dealer that sponsors me (and races) and everyone who got a sled from that dealer went deer hunting. They would have had a full truck load of 10 I they sent me home without a sled.



I still don't have brake pads!



The Mrs and I will be in the West Yellowstone area the second week in February, the first time sledding out there. I have an ice race the following Saturday so we will be flying and renting. I'm going to try to get a 4 stroke so my friends don't complain about me riding too fast.

My wife and I went out there with my sister and

brother-in-law back in Fedruary. We stayed in

West Yellowstone and rented Ski-Doo's from a guy

named Michael Mattson from West Yellowstone Reservations. Make sure you rent long tracks because with a short track you get stuck alot. We

spent 2 days ridding in the park and 2 out side of

it ridding. Doint worry about going to fast, there

is a speed limit out there and the cops out there

carry radar guns and they use them, in the park

and out. We also rode in Cooke City Montana a few

years back, that was some real boondocking for us

flat-landers from Michigan. I caint wait to get

back out there, you Mountain guys are so lucky.

After ridding out there a few times, ridding back

here is boring. If any of you guys are looking for

a place to rent sleds from out in West Yellowstone

give that Michael a call, 1-800-842-2882, there is

also a Ski-Doo dealer there in town that stocks all the parts you would need to fix a rental sled.

I found that out the first day. The hill didn't

look that steep and I almost made it.

Longtracks are for cheaters. Just kidding. With the 2 inch track and the power of a mod motor and with a light weight sled we do pretty good and save a lot of money on rental sleds for a week. At at least $150 a day times 2 sleds it adds up fast. I can outclimb or hang with most longtracks, except for the guys that live out there and have really sweet sleds. A buddy that goes with has a 99 mountain max with power inc pipes and spot on clutching and we're about even except in the deep (5 foot) powder, that long track really makes the difference there. While I rely on on speed and go up a hill at 80mph he'll be tapped at 40mph and still go just as far. Now if he had the trackspin that I have... ah, I'm dreaming. I've been going 2 times a year since about 96. You guys are right, it's a blast. The little hills around here are nothing compared to out there.

P. S. I'm helping to bluid a track about 5 miles from my house tomorrow. Going to be hauling snow all day. Rumor has it that Cat, Polaris and Yamaha are all interested in coming this weekend to test. It'd sure be nice to test and ride with the big boys. We'll see if it works out. Hopefully at least one will be there.

I heard Cat will be at Telemark resort in Cable, WI this weekend. WE were supposed to have a race there next weekend but it got postponed. I smell a rat!

Extreme, you were right. Nobody showed. My Buddy is racing for Pat Hauck this year. If you don't believe me, go to page 7 of the Nov. 12 snow week. His name is Bradee Mlaskoch. He lives not even 5 miles from me, I talk to him every week and ride 4 wheeler with him all of the time. That's where we were hauling snow and building the track. But today they went testing with Yamaha, Vincent and Nagasaka (sp?) down south. We don't really have enough snow here and the fact that it's melting doesn't help. Look for him at Spirit Mountain in the sport class, you'll be surprised what a yamaha can do.

Durmax is good to go

Flame me if you want to I don't care.

A good friend of mine has a 3500 Chevy with the Durmax in it with the Allison Trans. (spelling may be off a little)

He loves his truck and for good reasons he pulls a goose neck trailer pretty much every day that weights somewhere between 10,000 to 12,000 lbs depending on what he needs for tools/supplies that day.

He has roughly 16,000 miles on it WITHOUT any trouble. I think the transmission drives the engine meaning it keeps the engine in the rpm range it needs to be to perform well.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE my truck and would never trade it for a Chevy. I talk crap almost everytime I see Ron about trucks.

I think my truck will out pull a hill over his truck. I have the six speed and he has the auto.

I'm from the old school auto for racin and stanard for power/pullin.

I'm glad that chevy is at 300 hp that means that dodge will have to raise the hp of the Cummins.



I was raised in Alpena Mi some 40 some years ago

so I can relate to the area you are talking about.

I have been to numerious races in Gaylord and Alpena. I always liked the Yamaha machines.



I look at it this way if you like Dodge than drive Dodge.

If you like Cummins then drive a Cummins. If you like Chevy than drive a chevy and so on.

I don't care for folks who get on this site and talk crap about something they don't know anything about.

I agree Chris. If you like it, then you can drive it. As long as nobody says that theirs is better than mine, who cares.

Extreme, maybe we'll meet up sometime this year racing. I'll be in the MN Disrtict North, either in Pro or Semi Pro... (they want the top 10 semi pro's from last year to move up, I was #4, but I don't think that I can hang onto the mod for 18 laps... yeah 18 lap finals and 10 lap qualifiers. Actully I know I can't hang on that long, especially without any practice. ), and I'm going to try to make all of the MN Regional races, is Semi-Pro. Good luck with your season.

P. S. Got brakes yet? We don't, and one of our buddies that's racing this weekend at Spirit doesn't yet either. Heck, we don't even have machines yet, cat said they're on a trailer but they don't know when they're being shipped. Hopefully this week.
