??? Towing Weight ???

I have a 03 3500. I have the truck at 8600lbs. I have a 26ft 12ton gooseneck trailer. I would like to be able to tow my "forklift" from job to job. maybe only 20 to 30 miles. the lift is 17000lbs.



With my gooseneck trailer what an i legal to tow?

8600 truck+7000 trailerEST +17000 lift =32600 total weight



i was told that the truck is good for 21500 with the gooseneck. i dont know if that is true or not but assuming that it is. Im 11100 OVER. my GVW



The weights are correct because i have had everything on a scale except the trailer.



Could i ever tow the lift without destroying the truck. I say NO but im not sure that my thinking is right. ????

As far as legality goes forget GCWR. Does your state require a CDL (if it is an interstate operation then you definitely need a CDL) for those weights and does your state have weight based registration?

Hauling livstock is a little different because cattle have legs (shock absorbers) and that makes the ride a lot smoother. However, I hauled way more weight than that before adding springs and airbags.

Dad hauls stacks of 3-4 GN trailers with his '03 CTD. Those loads weigh around 22-23K + p/u. It's not fun, but it works.

For short runs of 20-30 miles, hook it up and go.

11,500lbs truck + 24,000 trailer = 35,500 lbs
35,000 - 8,600 truck - 7,000 trailer = 19,900 lbs you can put on the trailer. You should be plenty legal on your weight. But you will need a CDL since the forklift is used for commercial purposes.

What is the GVW on the trailer? What is your hitch rated at?

I dont have a hitch in my 03 the trailer is a 12 ton econoline trailer.
