Could the TPS be going out again??? This week the pain-o-matic in the 95 start going in and out of lockup and in and out of overdrive...

History of this truck... it now has 155,000 miles on it... At 120,000 we had the dealer install a NEW trany and converter... This lasted for about 6 months... and it started again. . they adjusted the trany. . (they said. ) and it would be OK for a month or so... this lasted a untill the new trany had been in about a year. . (about 135,000 miles) The dealer installed a new converter. . (under the trany warrenty) This lasted a few more months, and it was back to its old tricks... We told them about the TPS, but they kept telling us that this was NOT the problem, and that all the readings were OK with the TPS... After them adjusting the trany. . and it not fixing anything. . we purchased a TPS, and again were told that this was not the problem, and we would not be able to return the part... (It is a Dodge part. . not a Cummins... at least that's what cummins says. . two different senors... whatever. . ) We installed the new TPS and she has gone 1 yr and 3-4 months with out missing a lick. . until last week, it when in and out of lock up a few times... we changed the fuild and filter (did this to install the trany temp sensor) Monday we had the recall done on the throttal cable. On the way to the dealer it acted up a little, but on the way home it really was acting up!! I do not think that the cable install had anything to do with this problem??

Can it be the TPS again?? We have not tried adjusting the brackets that the TPS mounts too. Is there a way to check the TPS, Ohms check?? Could it be the brake switch?? (the brake lights are not coming on. . but I know that some of these switchs have multi contacts inside, each for different functions) Just can't believe that another $200 is switch is bad... or is it... Just need some help... we sure like this truck when it is shifting ...

Thanks for your help. . and opinions...

Bryan,

Some folks have had good luck hosing the TPS down with contact cleaner. Give that a try and see what happens. My first TPS was bad but it tested good with a meter. The mechanic at my Dodge dealer looked at it with his scope while the truck was running and said that it was kind of "ratty". He replaced it and the new one has been ok since then. There was about 40K on the truck then and there is 171K on it now.

Bryan, the dealer may have messed up your TPS adjustment, readjustment is part of the procedure when replacing the cable. The TPS should be adjusted to 1. 0 volts +/- 0. 20 volts with the throttle linkage at an idle position. Your service manual has more info, get a manual if you don't have one. My TPS has gone though periods of hunting, I always have been able to fix it with electronic cleaner. I now include cleaning with my oil changes and never have a problem. 146k on the stock TPS.

You might want to recheck your trans fluid level. I had fluid changed and then had a similar problem a few days later. Fluid level was low, added fluid to full mark (hot) and back to work. It seems to me that the transmission takes a trip or two to fill all the little nooks and crannies, the level goes down and the transmission acts up.

Just my experience.

Shortly after we got the wife's '95 she started having the infamous TPS hunt. I was going to get a new one,but all I've been doing is cleaning out it with brake cleaner periodically and it works fine.

I went by Cummins NW and inquired about a new TPS because it sure looks like a Cummins/Bosch engineered part. The guy blew me off saying it's a Dodge only part and I have to back to the dealer for it. He later ended up calling me at work and telling me that it is a Bosch part and that Cummins does sell them.

Cleaning??

Ok. . how do I clean the sensor?? Spray in where the shaft goes in and blow it out with air?? Looks like it is sealed...

Going to clean and adjust it today...

Mike. . like I said Cummins dealer told me the same thing. . Dodge only... Maybe I should have tried a different Cummins dealer. .

Thanks for the help guys...

I went through 22 TPS units under warranty then had to replace battery and TPS had already tested bad so dealer ordered new one since I had already used up their stock. Anyway when I returned TPS was good  it was then determined that the voltage reducer (transformer? resistor?) was bad and would give strange readings. bad part this voltage reducer is on the CPU good part still under warranty about $500 part.

I would check the voltage going in and out of the TPS

Bryan, just direct the spray where the shaft goes in while working the throttle back and forth. I have often thought is would be nice to drill a small hole in the tps to direct the spray better but have never taken the time to find a good place to drill because the shaft method seems to work just fine.
