OD has been in and out sometimes (not really bad but thought a good cleaning would work). So I disconnected the TPS and cleaned the posts. I also tried cleaning around the big screw underneath the TPS. Took a screwdriver and made sure that it could easily turn left and right. I could feel it clicking by the contacts on the inside. Now doesn't shift into OD at all. Could I have broken a contact from inside? Is there a special way to put back together? The throttle part looks as though it is pointing to 11 o'clock if you consider the electrical connector is plugging in at the 12 o'clock position. To mount TPS back in, had to turn that screw just a little to have everything align up. Something so simple can cost so much... ;(
I am getting a price for new one on Monday, I assume about $200 or more. Thanks too all, stinks driving at 45 mph now.

These TPS's are a pain! With a volt meter there should be one volt at idle and above 3 volts at full throttle. Measure this at the center wire of the TPS connector to ground(I use a stright pin into the back of the connector). To clean the inside the top needs to be removed. TDR issue 8 has an article on how to do this. Most of us run at about the same speed day in and day out, I think the contacts wear through at these places over time. If it's just dirty contacts cleaning will slove the problem if the contact are worn through its time for a new TPS.
Good luck.

NuttyMopar,

I had TPS problems with my 92 D350 auto I used to have. You can save bucks by buying the new TPS from a Cummins distributor instead of Dodge. Good luck,
Bill

This is a completely sealed unit. I can not take it apart at all without taking a sawsall to the stupid thing. Taking a volt meter, my brother was gettng about 4. 6 volts at an idle. This was connecting to the plug part of the wires. Just not much of anything for the module. no pulling apart or anything. My dodge says $342. 22 for a new one. Need to be up and running before the weekend. Suppose to take it this weekend for an overnight xmas shopping. Any other dealers that I can order from online or a phone call and ship overnight. Thanks

I called local Cummins place (2 hour drive) and they need to know engine serial number. I have not found that yet, but think it is on the timing cover on the front of the motor. That shiny plate that I painted about 8 months ago. Guess it is time to clean that little plate. Cummins is asking $150 for a TPS (well at least a Kenworth one). Since I didn't have engine number he wasn't sure for that motor. HAS too be cheaper then Mother Mopars.

Scott The top can be remove by using a small flat blade screwdriver. There is a cap about the size of a quarter that is glued in place, scrape the glue away and the cover will come off.
The TPS is just a veriable resistor. One of the three wires at the TPS connector is suppling 5 volts. The center wire is the output going back to the engine control module. If there is 4 volts on the center wire the engine control module will not let the transmission shift into overdrive because it thinks the throttle is to the floor.

Once again, this group has come through for me. What a wonderful bunch of people. I just ordered a new TPS from Cummins Northwest for a reasonable price. Beat out my local place by many $$$'s. Shipping over night and hopefully will be up and running past 45 mph real soon. Thank you all once again. RAM ON PEOPLE.

Just installed my new TPS from Northwest Cummins. Look a little different underneath but still functions the same as the old. I almost what it was like to drive above the 45mph line. Shift great and I bet I will get better gas mileage now.
Gene - my old one is a completely sealed unit. No glue or nothing. The new one I can see the glue (but didn't scrap it to see inside). The old one I am hacking away with a knife to look inside, the top has the ident for a seperate cover but it is solid all the way through. But I WILL PREVAIL !!!

Thanks people.

Just a thought, but since this darn thing seems to be one of the few 'destined to go foobar' items, perhaps you could post some pics of the inside if you ever manage to get it apart. .
I know sure as you know what, that since I've even mentioned it mine will probly book out now. Anyway, good luck on your determined effort to have a look inside!!!!

Hey guys, how hard is it to remove and replace a TPS? I mean is there any alignment considerations etc? I know mine is on it's last legs as many times in order to get it to kick into overdrive I have to let up on the accelerator and then accelerate and it always kicks into OD. I know, knock on wood cause one of these times it won't kick into OD.

it was very easy to replace the TPS. I was also concerned about putting it on since my old one was slightly broken and the thing didn't align up. I would need to turn it a little to align it. But with the new one, just slid it right on without a problem. I am in the process of getting pictures inside of my old TPS. Just need to find the time to dremel it out so I can see inside.

I've had mine on and off a few times now. Just be sure to measure the voltage of the center wire (with ingition on) before beginning. I found that mine was a little under 1 volt, actually it was about . 65 volts. When i initially reinstalled the TPS I adjusted it up to a full 1 volt and did not like the shift into OD that resulted so I reset it back down to post removal value. You just need to make sure that when you reinstall it that the little bolthead fits into the corresponding female hole smoothly. Other than that its pretty simple really. You may find a bit of tinkering with it will allow you to adjust when OD kicks in more to your personal liking.
FWIW.
