my 06 has the factory 7pin wire. i was trying to hook up to a trailer with a 6 pin old style, smaller dia. the problem is the brake is all ways on. even with the controller unpluged? the truck is all stock. i tried 2 different adaptors. kp

The 6 pin adapters never seem to work. I just ended up converting all my stuff to 7 pin. Trust me, it will make your life easier in the end.

many of the converters (especially Wal Mart) are marked that center plug is brake which is different than your trailer, go to a good parts strore and get their 7 to 6 converter and it will solve your problem, I use them all the time, try it before you leave the parts store

KP, I've been there done that! There are two different schemes for 6 pin connectors. The so called west coast style has the brake on the center pin and the always hot auxillary to the side. The other style reverses this. When you plug your trailer in, the brakes are hooked to the hot auxillary. Plug in your adapter. With a test light find the hot aux. If the center pin is not hot, you have a west coast style brake center pin adapter and you need the other one. And the other way around! Most semi gray haired parts house counter men ought to be able to fix you up. Piece of cake!! Mark

I can only assume from your comment that the 6 pin system your using on the trailer that isn't yours has been custom wired to something other than the standard the industry uses... the only suggestion I can make is to get a male 7 pin and a female 6 pin, and sit down and custom make the adapter using a volt meter and searching out the connectors and what the trailer needs in which location. .

7-6

thanks for the help. the first store sold me two 7 to 6 pin reducer. but they, were the same. not labled. went to a different store they gave me two different ones . the first one worked just fine. kp

KParsons,

I have found that most 7 pin to 6 pin adapters can be disassembled and the two wires can be reversed. For some reason most horse trailers use the center pin opposite from the utility trailers 6 pin. Look at 6 pin connecter diagram and notice the two different diagrams for the brake wire and the hot wire on the center pins.
