trailer connector wiring

someones butchered my factory trailer connection. I have figured out what the taillites and turn signal are and the trailer brake and backup lites but there is a red wire that is hot all the time is it the charging wire if you have a battery on the trailer and there is a black wire that i am assuming is the ground. any help is appreciated i tried the search but no luck thanks again

It sounds as though you have it right. For model year 2000, ground is Black & battery is Red/Tan.

You're on the right track On the '97 black is ground, red is 12v hot, and blue is trailer brakes. You've got tail and stop/turnsignals figured out, the odd ball wire is backup lights
