Rookie question... . putting 95 tran line in my y2k and was told to remove the heat exchange because the new one (95) has one... . what is a heat exchange and what does it look like???

heat exchanger?

Are you sure they said the heat exchanger itself or the check valve in the transmission line at the heat exchanger? Need more info to answer your ? correctly, unless I'm real off base here. But I think what they meant was, if you purchased the line from dodge for the transmission temp port the line has a check valve built into it, and you want to remove the one that is at the exchanger so that you won't have 2 check valves. You will then need and adapter at the end to replave where you removed the check valve from the heat exchanger, can't remember off hand what size it was. Let us know what you find out. :D

check valve

I see you have the DTT valve body and conv. With this combo I would remove the ball spring and retainer from inside the fitting or have another hose made so that you eliminate the check valve. This valve does restrict cooler flow some and has been known to stick:eek: and cause planetary meltdown. There will be some drain-back of the converter when set for long periods, but after starting if you let the truck idle for 20-30 seconds before putting in gear you will never notice. I remove this on every Ram I do whether gas or diesel. Good Luck.

inarush76,

If this valve sticks we would know rather quickly right? I assume the transmission temps will run higher if the valve sticks, but is there chance of any other damage?

Did Bill K. recommend this to you or is it a personal preference of yours?

Thanks,

I would like the info on just where the check ball is . . My lines at the heat exchanger on the motor does not appear to be just lines with fittings . What does the heat exchange to in the 1/2 gal or so tank. .

The lines going to the core in front of the grill have some type of fitting with a metal clip as it goes into the rubber line . Would the check ball be there and which line and how to remove it . .

I have looked this over but gave up on trying to do it . .

Blind man taking a walk alone.

I should proof read before i Submit

The lines to the tank on the motor look to be just open fittings. with no check ball on them. .

sorry bout the mistake. .

If you have the stock lines on your truck, there is no check valve in the line, it's in the transmission. If you replace your hot line coming out of the front of the transmission with the '95 line that has a temperature port that you can install a gauge sensor in, that line comes with a check ball in it. That would mean you then have 2 check valves and the one in the line can be removed.

On my old truck the check valve was located on the torque converter (forward line on the transmission case) out line between the hard line and the rear port on the heat exchanger. It was a real PITA to remove when I installed the factory line with the sender port.

The factory line with the sender port is a combination of hard line and soft line, the check valve is located at the heat exchanger end of the line in a soft section, some guys have discarded the soft section that contains the check valve and had a hose shop make them up a replacement section.

Ok I'm getting confused. That's not to difficult for me to do ;)

I just replaced the line on my 96 with the replacement line with the temp port. My original line had a check valve in the line and the new line has a check valve in the line also. I didn't remove the check valve in the new line. Should have I?

OK..... so is then correct... .

I have two options

1. remove the ball spring and retainer from inside the fitting from the heat exchanger (oil to water) on the passenger side of the engine.

2. or replace the hose on the 95 line.

Is that correct?

DCouch,

When installing the the line with the port you can:

Remove the existing check valve which should be installed in the rear port of the heat exchanger. When you install the new factory hard line/soft line combo you will need an adapter to take the place of the old check valve fitting. I don't have the specs here handy. I will check my old fitting and see what it is. You need a male/male flare (transmission line) to pipe (heat exchanger) adapter to replace the original check valve. If you order the line from Blairs shop in BC, he will include the fitting for a couple of bucks.

Take the factory hardline/softline combo to a custom hose shop, hydraulic places usually will do this, have them replace the soft section that contains the check ball with a suitable piece of hydraulic hose.

If you want to run without a check valve remove the factory installed check valve from the heat exchanger and have them terminate the new section with male pipe threads or go with the female end and use a new check ball-less apapter.

or

Some guys just cut the factory hardline that comes installed on the truck and install a compression T fitting and use a bushing for the temp sender.

Hope thats clear, my 13 month old daughter is screaching for lunch as I type this.

Cooker, I also have a '96 and installed the line with the temp port. I left my check valve in. When I had my transmission in for mods I asked Dave Goerend if it should be removed. He said it was up to me but he also said it was pretty rare that the valve caused a problem. I left it in.

Thanks guys for all your help..... I went outside and put a wrench on the heat exchange and couldn't budge it..... so I went to the local hose shop and $14. 00 and 10 minutes later I had a new line made. :D
