Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Engine Hammering

I finally got around to hooking up my trans temp gauge this weekend and was wondering what exactly I should be looking for in the temps.

Mainly what is considered to be too hot.

Thanks inadvance! :D

I was wondering this too. My 97 never gets above 150, even in 95 degree stop and go. (I was secretly wondering if the guage was accurate)

On highway, empty, I see 135-140*. 160* in town. The highest that I have seen is 190*. That was off-road driving through a soft, old corn field in high-side. Put t-case in low and went back down to 160*.

Trans Temp

Ya'll need to be stating where you are measuring the trans temps to be comparing apples to apples... Here is a rule of thumb: If you are measuring temps with the newfangled cooler line port ( which I am ) your temps will be approximately 30 degrees warmer than some one measuring in the trans pan. Also the cooler line location is more instantaneous. In normal lockup towing or not, I see a temp right around 175 degrees. If stopped at a stop light, or driving in city traffic never gettin to lockup, I can see 210 degrees very quickly with it going to 220 if I am not careful. Since I have gotten the DTT smart controller, I get lockup in 3rd now and that really helps keep temps down.

I believe that if you are measuring the temp in the pan that you don't want to see any more than 190 degrees or so. If in the line, you should be OK to 220...

To keep trans temps down: 1) Get into lockup! 2) put trans in neutral when you come to a stop light. 3) Get a Mag Hytec double deep!!

wow, yours is considerably higher than mine. I am pulling my readings from the trans cooler line that goes to the heat exchanger on the side of the motor. Mine stays about 180* in stop and go traffic. I am sure I have probably had it higher when I was towing, but didn't have the gauge hooked up to know.

Imills...

I don't know if my profile showed up or not and another thing that I should have pointed out was the type of torque converter involved. I have a DTT 89 percent converter and that is tighter ( more efficient ) than stock, so will produce a little more heat when the torque converter is unlocked.

Just my . 03c

Mine is located in cooler line. Yesterday I was towing about 4500lbs. of junk and in town my temp was between 206-213, once locked my temp dropped to 188-192. On the hwy. temp dropped to 179 and the weather was 97*.

I have never seen the temperature in my Maghytec DD pan above 190. There was a good article in the TDR about transmission temperatures and life expectancy a couple of issues back. My copies are at work and if no one posts it,I will tommorow.

My sensor is in the discharge to the cooler line. In bumber to bumper traffic when towing I have to be very careful to keep the temp below 220. I tow in 2nd with the smart box on. At full stop I shift to neutral. Backing my 5er I have to be very careful as the temp will reach 240.

Towing at 62 mph in O/D with the smart box on in near 100 degrees transmission temp as about 170.
