I had the standard duty on my 2500 - the snap ring broke requiring rebuild - about $1000. 4 years later transfer case BLEW up - replaced it with the HD. I don't think they are prone to the not uncommon snap ring problem.

Are the two interchangeable? Is there a difference in the transmission output or anything else that would keep a person from swapping an HD in place of a standard transfer case?
 
there is a spline size difference between the two. . easy to adapt and change, just common parts issue. .



also the HD has tripple planitary gears v/s a single set up on the std. duty one... much more beefy inside
 
HD Transfer Case

I have the HD Transfer Case in my 01 2500 and I do not hear any noticable whine or noise. When I ordered the truck I specified everything as HD as I could, and what was not HD was modified to be HD. So far I am happy with the truck's performance and it's fuel mileage. Never, ever even consider a gasoline truck again. Just my . 2 worth, that is all!
 
The HD has the same trouble with broken snap rings. It seems to be an issue with standard cab trucks. I installed a "transfer case saver" in place of my snap ring a few weeks ago and the ears were already broken off the snap ring. The first ring lasted me 198k but required a rebuild when it broke.



I highly recommend you investigate the transfer case saver.

It works until 2000-2001?, when the tail housing became an integral piece and is not retained by the "four bolts"? According to Frank at Gilly's (Tcase saver manufacturer).



Anyone got one of the later models on the bench? Frank would like to make a kit for these too. . he can't seem to get a core for r&d?
