I just got off the phone with Advanced Adapters, they are saying they don't make an adaptor for a '98 NV4500/ '85 NP205 transfer case, and they think they will bolt together without one. Does anyone know if this is true, and if not, what the h*ll do I do to make it work? I cannot use the NP241HD case as the front output is on the wrong side, and I feel the NP205, being gear driven, is a stronger case anyway. All thoughts/comments/suggestions cheerfully and gratefully accepted.

I believe they will bolt together without an adapter plate.

I was told that a np205 will bolt directly to the 47rh auto trans, so the np205 must have the same bolt pattern as the chain drive transfer cases. I think it will work.

Well, our first generation 4X4's have N. P. 205's connected to either the Chrysler 727, Getrag 360, or the Chrysler 518? Anyway, what do the guys do when they convert the Getrags to N. V. 4500's? I think I read where they are a direct bolt up. What about the spline count? Are the ones from the older transfer case the same number as the ones in our trucks? Just trying to help out! Maybe someone else will help out but I think they will bolt up.

The front driveshaft needs to line up with the differential on the front axle.

I purhased a auto trans that came out of 92 truck and he made it work bolting up the 205 to nv4500

but had to modify parts , contact me directly and I will see if I can locate his email?

You might try your local Dodge dealer. I believe they started installing the NV4500 about half way through the 93 model year( could anyone clarify this for me) and they sould be able to get your the adapter. The piece you need shoud be a small piece that blots between the trans and transfer case and should have the trans mount on it. Just as a thought, you might try and find a NP241 out of a 1990 or so to 93 dodge with a gas motor, it has the output on the pass. side and see if it will bolt up.

Got some good news and some bad news,

The good news is that the NV4500 does bolt on to a 1985 NP205.

Bad news is that it will cost you about $700 in parts from the dealer. The 1985 NP205 transfer case imput shaft is much smaller than the Diesel NP205s (1989-1993)and you will have to change the imput shaft/bearing/case adapter and a couple other things as well, but it works well when you are done :).

If you need part numbers let me know and I will list them for you.

Kyle

GCobb,

You lost me, is the NP205 out of a 1983 or 1990 truck ? If the NP205 is from of a 90 Cummins with a Getrag it should be all set. The NV4500 is supposed to be a direct replacement for the getrag 5 speed. As for the part numbers I will pull my invoices and post them Sat.

Kyle

Here are the parts required to convert a 1985 NP205 transfer case to accept a 360 Getrag 5 speed transmission.

Note: IF you want to use a Larger size U-Joints that the 1989 to 1993 Cummins trucks use you will also need to change the output shaft and bearing/housing as well.

I got these part numbers from the invoices that my Dodge dealer gave me. PLEASE check the Part Numbers before ordering anything.

Hope no one gets sticker shock

Hopefully someone can find a cheaper source for these parts.

Hey Guys, I just found a Junk yard in northern Wisconsin that has a bunch of Dodge Trucks with Cummins being parted out. The guy to talk to is named Paul, he told me that he has Cummins trucks from 1989 to 2001. I just bought a couple parts off a "early 91" and Paul seems to know what he is talking about. They will ship COD or take credit cards. To me this is a big deal, I have been looking for "used" Cummins parts for a couple of years. Their phone number is 1-800-338-4002.

When I called them two months ago, they had a NP205 from a 92 W-350 Cummins and the price was real reasonable.

Joe

Thanks guys

You guys are the best. Thanks for all the info, I'm already on my way to stuffing this thing in. I'm sure I will be picking your collective brains again in the near future. Kyle and Joe, thank you both very much for your time and efforts.

Should I be able to:

Truck:1995 2500 Auto Stock.

rotate the front drive shaft withe the Transfer case in 2 WD, Transmission in part and truck is setting in drive way. Mine dies and I seem to think is shouldn't.

Thanks for your Time and Help. Rex McKinney: Kentucky Dodge

The front driveshaft will spin freely when the trasnfer case is in 2wd, Also are your hubs unlocked or locked?

about the transfercases..... the auto np205 from a cummins have the 23spine shafts the np205s from a the 5sp diesel trucks have the 29spline and larger bearings etc...

Thanks

Deo
