99 RAM leaking from transfer case? Been leaking awhile now but unsure where from. ATF on underside of bed but cannot find source other than transfer case constantly low. Appears to be coming off u-joint at output from transfer case but u-joint is completely dry! Rubber boot at output shaft from transfer case is also completely dry... . No fluid what so ever! Undeside of bed directly about furthest u-joint coming back from transfer case is wet though... . This would be the 1st u-joint coming out the back of the transfer case.

Logical assumtion would be the seal at the rear of the transfer case but it's completely dry at the boot where the weep hole is. This thing is driving me nuts! Suggestions?

Thanks,

Clay

Replace the t-case rear output seal. I see a few at the shop. It only leaks when driven cuz the oil needs to get pumped to that area and the pump only turns when the driveshaft turns.

Another possiblity is, if it is a Heavy Duty xfer case it will have a little rubber plug on the top of the tail housing that can also leak. Either way check to see if the vent is pluged.

Thats what I plan on doing but I still don't understand why everything at the seal & u-joint for that matter remains dry... . Totally free of ATF yet the exhaust & underside of the bed is covered in ATF...

LD transfer case. No PTO door. Do all of the transfer cases have the rubber plug? Aren't they run to a hose for venting. If so, any ideas where it's at?

Thanks

The yoke that goes into the t-case is hollow, as it goes over the output saft. The seal only seals the outside of the yoke. There should be a plug-- like an expansion plug --on the inside, down between the yoke ears, behind the joint cross. Easy to tell if its missing, but if its there & slowly leaking (like turbo said, oil only there when your driving) the shaft spins the oil off and no drip is found. Exept on the under side of the bed... .

The seal is installed. Time will tell if it stops leaking. Their were (2) part numbers & of course I received the wrong part first. The (2) part numbers are as follows. DC Dealer prices of course! :(

5086054AA The larger of the (2) seals $61. 32

4746258 The smaller of the (2) seals $29. 09

My non HD-241 Transfer case required the #4746258

Clay :)

Did not stop it entirely but was a HUGE improvement. I didn't have any RTV so I used something else which is probably why it still weeps a bit. I'll replace it again this summer & have some RTV on hand!
