What is the best lube to use in the transfer case? In the past there were syncronizers in the case but with the permanantly turning front driveshaft I don't think there are syncros in the case anymore. There must be a better alternative to ATF for use in these transfer boxes. Any ideas?

After reading this thread I felt that I should add my experience. .

I was able to purchase a 5 gal pail of lube for the transmission in the GL4 spec in 100% synthetic oil from our local Castrol Dist.

I was also able to purchase a 5 gal pail of lube for the rear end in the GL5 spec in 100% synthetic oil from the same distributor...

He distributes the ATF - 4 oil for the transfer case but can't sell it to me as it's a private blended oil and can only be sold to DC dealers... . He has nothing on the shelf that will meet the specs of that private labeled oil..... until a few months ago he couldn't sell me the GL4 or GL5 either... ... He says it will be a while before he will have either the ATF - 4 for sale or something on the shelf in a different product that meets the same spec... .

They offer more than one brand of oil and I can't see where the ATF - 4 is available yet..... Since he only sells oil and I felt was honest with me, he mentioned that standard ATF doesn't hold up or offer the lubrication properties desired by DC... ... . I'd be carefull about what I put in my transfer case... .

I use a lube center for the engine but we check our own boxes and refill them ourselves... ... using the correct product... .

I'm guessing the lube center guys are either putting in the wrong fluid if they have to add... . or have had to go to DC to purchase the correct product.....

This has been beeten into the ground but here go's ;)

The stuff in your 6 speed IS NOT ATF. Compare it to the real ATF in your xfer case. According to most accounts, including a TDR members conversation with a dodge engineer, it's 5w - 30 motor oil. Use a good synthetic (Red line & A-oil are good) eng oil and you'll be fine.

Just my . 02

I realize the 6 speed lube has been hashed out several times, that's not the question. I was inquiring if a transfer case with no syncros needs ATF like the older ones. I'm thinking Red Line MTL may be a good compromise.

On the transmission note I put Royal Purple Syncromax in today and it shifts more difficult than the stock Mopar stuff. Looks like it will be drained soon. A 15 mile $25 learning experience! I doubt Red Line would perform much differently but I may try it too.

Hmm, maybe if I was paying better attention eh?

I've got Red-line in mine, Didn't seem to make any difference in mileage but then again I didn't expect it to.
