transfer case oil chanege

first of all i want to say hello everybody. i just renewed my membership and glad to be back. any way my question is i am going to change my trans fluid this weekend, and i was wondering i have not changed my transfer case oil have 52k on my truck use 4wd about 5 times a year pulling my 5er off road places. how often are you supposed to change the transfer case oil.

I'm not sure what exact recommendations in the manual are, there should be a schedule A and B, one for mainly highway driving and the other for everything else. I change mine once a year, same with the front differential, the rear I change a little more often.

Some people will run theirs for years and never change it until they have a problem and some will probably change theirs more often than is really needed, but I look at it as cheap maintenance and I don't mind doing the work, plus it if fairly easy to do, so I probably change mine a little more often than some.

I change it every 30k. Doesn't matter how often you engage 4wd.

Looks like the t-case is 45,000 miles or 36 months.

I could of sworn the Owner's Manual states 15,000 (severe duty). Could be wrong. I change mine with the differentials at 15,000 miles. Gives me that warm fuzzy feeling! Besides, If I have too much "excess" money laying around the Child Support Enforcement Team will come looking for me... ...

I change mine at 15K intervals also. It's always dirty looking at 15K. I use Amsoil ATF in it fwiw.

I agree, I don't think it would matter since there are no clutches in it like a transmission. I have always used Dexron III in mine, I bet if the exact same transfer case was in a GM it would say to use Dexron III.

The t-case has a pump inside to distribute fluid. I change my t-case fluid every 30,000 kms, sooner if the fluid is dirty. I use ATF+4 because I have it on hand for the transmission. I have never found that these truck t-cases are fluid sensitive and have used Mobil 1 ATF in some.

A word of advice, remove the fill plug first then the drain plug. Its no fun finding out after the drain plug is removed that the fill plug is seized.

t-case oil

atf-4 is really good oil i use amsoil my 95 has 300k amsoil in all running gear all origanal no problems farm truck haul hay cattle tractors hit scales at 10ton regular florida heat to deal with to when i went to sythetic my t-case oil guit turning black the needle bearings in the aluninum case didnt like the loads i was hauling i change every 25k and it stays clean can see real fine particles of metal but bright red instead of black. and there is a plastic pump impellor to deal with also. my 03 is on the same maintenance no prob 50k and front half of case spins where it didnt on 95

I recently changed my front, & rear diff's, G56, and X-fer case at 45K miles, and none of them were bad looking. The diff's had slight odor, but were still ok color, and transmission and case were both still pretty and red.

I am at 30k miles on my '07 and I am going to drop the G56 oil and the transfer case. I called Standard Transmission in Texas and they recommended Amsoil Synchromesh oil for the G56. Has anyone used that in the transfer case also?

Transfer case uses ATF+4... I'm currently using Amsoil but have used Redline. BTW, I have used Royal Purple, Redline, Dodge(Mobile), Torco fulids in my NV5600 and can't say I experienced any great difference in shifting. Maybe I'm just too ham fisted to notice, but they all feel about the same to me!

Just changed mine last weekend. Very easy project. Like others have said, remove the fill plug first. I dropped the skid plate to avoid the mess. Filled it back up with 2 3/4 quarts of Redline fluid and down the road I went.

The G-56 requires ATF+4 as well as the transfer case. If the Amsoil products are used, the G-56 will require aprox. 6 Qts. Universal ATF4, and the XFR Case will require just over 2 Qts of the same fluid.
