I did a search of the forums and did not see a post similar to my issue: Transfer case will not shift into Neutral or 4Low.

I had to use 4WD to get through the 12” drifts in the drive way to get out this AM. For about 5 miles I was in 4 high as the roads snow and slush covered. At the point where the road turned to just wet pavement I wanted to shift on the fly into 2WD. The Xfer case handle physically would not move. I pulled over and did the reverse/ step on the clutch/ move forward routine to eliminate any bind that may have occurred while driving in 4WD. It did go into 2WD. When I got to work I tried moving through the Xfer case ranges to see if there was any bind still occurring. It will go from 4Hi into 2WD normally but will not go into neutral or 4Low. I am going to check it out when I get home to physically inspect underneath.

Last time I used 4WD about 6 weeks ago on dry, steep dirt roads it worked fine. In reading through the searched post returns there was mention of trying to (paraphrasing)… “slip the 4wd on loose surface to try and eliminate bind. . ” I will try something of this method on the way home.

I will report back tomorrow on what if anything I find, but any information on this in the mean time would be appreciated. See sig for year and model specifics. Thank you. –frank.

EDIT: The truck is stock with about 55K miles.

Well, I got underneath the truck last night... and found the problem. The temperature yesterday morning was such that the snow/ slush that splashed up and encased the transfer case froze into place! The Xfer case linkage would not physically move onto the desired position because of the build- up. I used a long scredriver and piece of 2x2 to dislodge the frozen slush. Back to normal now!

Glad it was nothing serious. What you desrcibed happening is exactly why I cycle the gear on a retractable gear airplane several times after a slushy takeof to prevent finding the gear frozen up after taking the slush to altitude.
