M1A2,
Sorry, I don't buy it. I don't doubt that you've heard about state troopers taking fuel samples from fuel/water separators, but Puh-leeze...
On my truck, there'd be no way they could do that without a major production at roadside. I've got the "prime-loc" remote fuel filter locator, a BD-Exhaust Brake on top of it, and so much other crap bolted on that it'd take somebody very familiar with the truck to even FIND the filter in the first place. I can't feature some trooper pulling me over for speeding, seeing my diamond plate toolbox in the rear of the truck, and thinking... "I'm going to remove my white, trooper-style gloves and crawl into this guy's engine compartment with my toolkit, for a fuel sample!"
On my truck (if you can find the filter at all) it's impossible to take a sample from it. When I replace filters, I have to (with great difficulty) fish a clear, 3/4", plastic hose up from the bottom of the truck, through a maze of vacuum hoses and electrical loom, to the bottom of the filter canister. I have pre-attached (with duct tape) an old, one-gallon, windshield-washer fluid bottle to the end of the hose. Fishing the line is NOT an easy task (I can feature this happening with traffic whizzing by, the trooper's butt sticking up in the air... ). Then, and only then, can I drain the fuel filter by pushing up on the end of the hose. There is NO WAY that anyone could put some sort of collection device under the fuel filter and obtain an uncontaminated sample in this way. Not going to happen...
Finally, the point I made earlier is key. If you have separate tanks, and can switch, with ease between them, it would be no trouble to simply run "legit fuel" during those times of "highest exposure" for you. In other words, you could run the "red" when you're tooling around, locally, obeying the traffic laws, and being a solid, law-abiding citizen (except for that engine "mod," EPA-emissions tampering you did... ); then, when you're on the interstate, driving along like a bat out o' **** , you switch tanks and burn the legal fuel. How long does it take, going 80 mph. , for the red fuel to cycle through the fuel system, and the filter to be purged of any "evidence?" Not long, I suspect...
Ultimately, if we get stopped for a traffic violation, most of us would be up for a serious reaming, anyway, if the state trooper turns out to be "Sam Memmolo's" (TDR "Celebrity Corner") State Trooper/Diesel Mechanic brother. I know that I could be cited for a half dozen "violations" of one "tree-hugging" statute or another. Have any of you "lost" your catalytic converter. ? I had such a mishap many moons ago...
I guess I'm getting philosophical and fatalistic about this stuff in my old age. I feel like, "when my number's up, it's up," and if I take intelligent precautions, (right model tank, right means of hookup) chances are VERY good that I'll be okay.
A final thought on an earlier topic ("doing the right thing"). In my neck of the woods, you can now "break the law" by trimming a tree in your yard, or mixing your garbage in "unapproved" containers. You can (and WILL) be fined (fail to pay the fine -- you'll be arrested) for putting yard trimmings in a plastic leaf bag (WAS the requirement, last year), instead of a NEWLY "authorized," paper bag (which, naturally, melts/disintegrates when it rains... ).
This is no longer a nation of laws "of, by, and for" the people. We've become, instead, a nation administered by tens of thousands of clueless, idiotic, pestilential, un-elected, busybody, bureaucrats who sit around on folding chairs in damp Washington, D. C. basements, writing ridiculous statutes designed to complicate and make our lives miserable.
If you undertake a remodel of your home, without a building permit, you've broken the law. In Atlanta, this ordinance extends to replacing a faulty outlet, or rehanging a front door. You need a permit AND an inspection if the cost of the work will exceed $40. It's against the law to cut down a tree on your property without a permit from (and an inspection by) the "City Arborist. "
The list of laws, rules, statutes, codes, and ordinances that rule our lives is endless and virtually impossible not to transgress, no matter how well-intentioned and saint like you live your life. And, my bet is that it's going to get worse before it gets better.
I'm gettin' a tank and burnin' red. (Extra rationalizations upon request... )
