Bill Kondalay warned me not to do 4 wheel launches, but did I listen? Nooooooooo. I had done about 20, 4x4 launches over the last month at 20 to 25 psi boost with no ill effects (but a sore neck due to the quick launch itself). So here I am at Muncie staging for my forth time trial when disaster struck!! Was at the lights, bringing the boost up when at about 8 psi, BANG!

Aw Sh**!! I'm dead on the track and stuck in 4x4 to boot.

The track personnel found out real fast that you can't push a 7600 pound truck off the track around a 90 turn. With the help of a gentleman who's name I didn't get, we pulled the violated vehicle off the track with his truck, and over to my "pits".

A quick jack of the rear tires off the ground verified that it wasn't the output shaft that broke (I still had park) nor the transfer case itself. Soooo, the most likely cause was the front hub/shaft assembly (I hope this is the correct name)

This is where the Diesel Gods were with me that day. Bill Kondalay of DTT and Rick Smith, Jack Williams from Dave's Diesel and I had a conference and decided they could get me going again by dropping the trans in the grass and replacing the damaged parts.

Lets put this in perspective, I'm dead in the water,

and I've got Bill K. ( THE transmission god in my book!), Rick S. (A diesel god) and Jack W. (A true guru of transmission rebuilding!) who are willing to give up their afternoon and do a transmission overhaul in the pits on the grass!! All this without a transmission jack, truck lift or any of the other stuff associated with a shop!!

We pulled the wounded ram over to Bill K. 's pits and the work commenced. Within 5 minutes, there were 5 guys, Bill K. , Rick S. , Jack W, and two of Rick's good friends, under my truck attacking the trans and getting it ready to drop. I was designated gopher, and they ran my little hoofs to the quick getting tools and pieces we needed. I CANNOT STATE ENOUGH TIMES, HOW WONDERFUL AND HELPFUL EVERYONE WAS. Anybody I ask for tools or parts was more than ready to loan, give and or come over and lend a hand. At one point, as I was coming back from another tool gathering expedition, there was 5 guys under my truck and 4 more around, handing tools and such to the ones underneath.

I'm not ashamed to say that I had more than a few tears in my eye at such a sight. What a great bunch of people!!!!!

This was all taking place in the middle of the pits with NO shade and Mother Nature deciding that now was a good time to really crank up the sunshine, i. e. HEAT. . Jacks wife made sure that everyone was properly hydrated (with ice water) through out the ordeal. A great lady.

Within an hour and a half, the trans was out from under the truck and being taken apart by Jack W. As suspected, the front hub had split almost in half due to the shaft ripping out the splines. Bill K. had a new Heavy Duty machined hub and shaft

in his arsenal of parts, along with a few rebuild kits destined for other vendors. (The vendors all said not to worry, use whatever is needed out of their kits). Bill even had a new trans with him (that he was delivering to a vendor) that was also offered to me, but it was decided that mine wasn't damaged more than the hub, shaft, and a few steel plates being burnt when the pressure let loose when the hub split. (Another Canadian vendor not associated with DTT, even offered me one of their transmissions if we couldn't get the proper parts for mine).

We did have one moment when things were looking just a little bleak and that was when we couldn't get the billet piston out of the damaged hub. We needed that piston since no one else had one, but Bill K. saved the day and persuaded said piston that is was in it's best interest to cooperate... .

Everything went back together smoothly and the truck was up and running by 5:00 No leaks or loose bolts either!!

Through out the afternoon, we had a steady stream of people stopping by offering help, parts, tools or just looking at the crazy people doing a transmission overhaul in the grass.

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH, THE OUTPOURING OF HELP THAT WAS OFFERED TO ME!!

Many people just rolled up their sleeves and jumped right in where needed. I will post another posting with everybody's name that I can get. In all the stress on my part, I failed to get everybody's name who helped. Shame on me!!

Again, Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help out including Shanti(sp) K. , and her daughter,(yes my memory is shot!) Jack W. s wife (yikes, I forgot her name too, gulp. . ) and I'll post another list with everyone's name who I can get.

WE TRULY HAVE A GREAT BUNCH OF GUYS AND GALS THAT PLAY WITH DIESELS!!!!

BTW, the truck ran great all the way back to NW Ohio and not a drop of oil out of place either...

Brian:

What you are saying is the way it was 35 years back when I started Moto-Cross. Any bike that broke had everybody else in the class loneing parts and helping fix it for the next moto. Well now you see the way it is in that sport.

You are right though. This bunch of diesels heads are a different kind of animal. A crowd I hope to be counted as one of. :)

Eager, willing help like THAT from a vendor/mechanic says LOTS more than a full page advertisement, doesn't it!;) :D

WAY TO GO BILL AND HELPERS!:D :D :D

Sure makes me feel proud to be a part of this community! At the race track, there isn't that much of this sort of thing anymore... although the vintage racers are great! I broke a front upright strut at Sebring once... I went to look for some parts, came back to find 7 guys from another team working on my car! It was ready for the next session in about an hour and a quarter! Good job TDR'rs... you make me proud!

I was sitting there watching the drags with my dad and as soon as I seen Brian's truck, or rather his transmisison fail I said I bet Bill will be pulliing apart his truck and have it back together for him this afternoon. Sure enough, we walked down there a bit later and there was Brian's transmission on the ground with Bill and the others wrenching away.

It was nobody's fault but his own (no more 4wd launches huh Brian :) ), but the vendors that he has delt with sure took care of him in short order yesterday afternoon. What a great group of guys. I would just like to say that I am proud to be associated with such a great group of people willing to give up their afternoon to help a fellow CTD owner.

A big hats off to those that helped get Brian's truck back on the road yesterday. :)

Wow,the fact that all those guys did that job in the heat on there time away frim work jst goes to show you how tight this group really is in a time of need, even if it was brought on ones self. To think that Bill had most of the parts there to fix it,and the vendors chipped in the rest, says a lot for these guys. Im proud to be a TDR memner, and DTT supporter right now.

Who wants to chip in

Bill Kondolay deserves a vacation and he will never take one unless he is pushed too.

Come on Guys lets do it :)

WOW!!

O... ... . M... ... ... . G!!! What a cool story!! That is the coolest thing I can ever remember reading on this site!! Bill... ... ... . you truely a kind man and I owe you an apology for the improper way I handled myself a couple of weeks ago. Bill, you AND the rest of the awesome people here are absolutely top notch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris (VERY glad I am still here and back in my seat on the DTT wagon!!) :D

i cant say how awesome this group of guys has been and i wouldnt give it up for anything!! i just cant wait till i get a chance to contribute!

du$ty

p. s. for all of us guys that couldnt attend how did things go? was it awesome?

Just want to add, that we drove by a Bank Clock @ about 5:30p after leaving the track and it said it was 98* and earlier in the day someone had a Watch out of a James Bond Movie that could give you any info you could ever need, and he said there was 90% Humidity... so to give those that couldn't make it what everyone means by HOT during the day it was over 100 or very very close to 100 with 90% Humidity... . WOW

My initial SOTP (Seat Of The Pants) indication of the humidity and inherent increase in heat index was that it was around 98. 6°F and at least 75% relative humidity... .

Keep in mind that this was measured at the SOTP... . :-laf

Those guys were absolute troopers..... I took one look at Bill underneath the truck and said outloud to a fellow TDR companion that I was glad it wasn't me under there.

Matt

AWESOME!

Awesome story... with a happy ending too!

I know Bill K. is a stand-up kind of guy... as good as they come! :)

Although I don't know the rest of the helpers mentioned, my hats off to them as well.

Personly, I was glad that transmission broke, becuase it gave something for Bill to do besides repeating, "Didn't a D-max beat you last year, Gene?":D

Good story!!:D

I'm really glad Bill came, It just wouldn't be the same with out him!!

Kind of restores some faith in mankind. I had thought that the attitude of everything revolves around me had become a nationwide epidemic. Good story.

C'mon guys (and gals too), I still need the names of the fantastic

folks who helped out with Bill Kondalay and "crew" doing the "transmission rebuild in the grass polka"

Please?? Send names... ... These folks need to be acknowledged!!!

Thanks.
