Long story short: my 48RE sprung a leak from a rubbed line and drained the fluid... the transmission ate itself fast. Two and half months later, it was "fixed". Drove about 100 miles yesterday and had problems on the way home. The shifting pattern was abnormal (seemed to stay in 3rd, wouldn't go to overdrive, wouldn't downshift when going uphill, etc). Eventually, there was no power through the transmission... I thought I was back to square one. Checked fluid, normal. Turned off truck then restarted. Everything worked fine for about 10 miles, then it started again. I can regain power by turning off the truck and restarting. I'm thinking computer issue?!? Codes were p0700, p0837, p0838, p0839. ANY IDEAS??

The last thing I want to do is take it back to the place that took two and a half months to fix it the first time (remote Alaska with no dealership available). I have to call Chrysler today anyways to settle my warranty claim from the original issue and will ask advice as well.

My advice would be to contact Bill or Stephan Kondolay at Diesel Transmission Technology (DTT) in, if I remember correctly, Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. They are the closest full capability high performance rebuild shop and one of the several top 48RE transmission builders in the world. DTT has a website.

Thanks for all the advice. The transmission was flushed, but from what I have found out, that might not always do it. With all the clutch material it could clog in the radiator. A lot of places replace the radiator when when something like this happens. This clogging is most likely causing the transmission to "shut down".

A second shop looked at it, replaced the burnt fluid and filter, and found a lot of clutch material in the pan. It might have solved the clog cause it drives fine for now. I have an appointment next Monday at a transmission shop to have it fixed once and for all. The problem is that I have to take a ferry then drive 250 miles to get there. I just hope it holds until I do... any TDR members on call between Homer and Anchorage AK for a possible tow this weekend???

Don't know if this will help. I have a DTT transmission(love it) when it would not go in to a lower gear we replaced the governor solenoid 618, all is well.
