I have two questions here.

1. I have a 92 D 250 ctd 2x4 with a automatic. The transmission has a OD that bolts on with 6 or 8 bolts. I would like to find out which transmission I have. The local Dodge computer does not have my vin#, so they say, and the parts people can not look anything up for me without the vin#.

2. I would like to turn my 2x4 automatic into a 4X4 automatic. Can I just change out the OD unit for one that is from a 4x4? Do I have to change the main shaft also? I'm hoping this is a easy switch. I'm in the process of doing the conversion to a 85 D350 four door. The 92 was crashed. Also I do not want to give up the trans, it was rebuilt with a shift kit from Dunn-Rite and was running very well prior to the crash.

You have the A518/ 46RH transmission. Not bad in its own right for an auto, and since you have upgraded it, you are ahead of the game from stock.

As for your conversion, I cant tell you for sure if it will work. I imagine with anough parts swapping, it could be done, though. Kinda akin to swapping out parts to make a Getrag a 2wd or 4x4. Another option is to buy a worn out 4x4 auto transmission and swap your good internals.

Yes, 518/46RH transmission.

Yes, just switch the OD unit to a 4x4 version. Main shaft should not have to come out.

Thank you for the information. I looked into a divorced np205 but, this would be a little more than what I would like to do. I have not had time to take off the OD to see the end of the trans. The local tranmission place I spoke to said, they may have a OD unit for a small fee. The reason I would like to stick with the swap of the OD, is the cross member and rear support. I would like to make the conversion to the 85 four door as painless as posible.

With a few small mods you can use a 47RH OD unit also. Gets you some better pieces, helical gears, and more clutches depending on the unit.

there's a sticker on the front underside of the hood on the driver's side. it will tell you which transmission came with the truck.
