going to do1st trans fluid change with amsoil, have 48re, 2007, just dropping pan and filter change how much fluid goes back in?, and torque specs on re bolting pan. Thank You, Iam sorry for re posting this. #@$%!

Don't be sorry for posting this question. The initial fill for the 48RE is 4 qts, and the total fill by draining the torque converter is 17 qts. I would torque the bolts around 25-30 in. lbs.

If you drop the pan and replace the filter and let the truck sit overnight, you will need approx 7. 5 qts of ATF+4 to refill your trans. If you do it immediately after shutting down the engine, you will need approx 6 qts of ATF+4.

The stock pan will hold 5. 5 qts itself (ask me how I know... ) and once you remove the filter, approx 0. 5 to 2 more quarts will come out.

If you are super anal (again, ask how I know), you will pour the removed fluid in 1 gallon jugs and see exactly how much you removed.

Brake cleaner works like magic cleaning the pan and the magnet.

When you refill the trans, use one of those ON/OFF pour spouts that screws on the quart container. Its bright orange and available everywhere. It fits perfectly into the dipstick tube and will allow you to not spill a single drop. Take a sharp box knife or pocket knife and stab the plastic bottle bottom after you insert into the dipstick tube. It will allow the quart to go into the tube in about 5 sec vs. forever without the breather hole. You can then store this in a plastic sandwich bag to keep dirt/dust from accumulating on it and for future use...

Don't go crazy pouring the ATF in the dipstick, stop about 0. 5 qts less than you removed so that you don't overfill.

Drive the truck gently around your neighborhood for approx 5 miles or so and park on a level surface and then move the shift lever into park, then R, then D, then back to N. Set park brake. Go get a paper towel and check your level. It only takes about 12 oz to go from the LOW to FULL mark on the dipstick, so be careful.

The filter screws are T25 (Torx) and the torque spec is 35 in-lbs.

The pan bolts are 8mm (use a 13mm socket) and the torque spec is 13 ft-lbs.

Tighten in stages, for example, 9, 11, 13 ft-lbs so you don't damage the pan.

I have not used the Amsoil ATF. I have used Mopar ATF+4 (super expensive at the dealer) and now use Valvoline ATF+4 ($5. 49/qt at Schucks). I use the Valvoline because I trust the brand and Schucks always carries it and is near my house, my work, all over the city... its convienent.

The dealer has the overmolded gaskets and filters for approx $15 each.

Don't forget to wipe some new ATF on the gasket o-rings just like you would on the engine oil filter. This will prevent leaks from seal damage during the install.

If you plan on keeping the truck and do alot of towing, you might consider investing in an aftermarket pan with a drain plug or have a friend weld a drain plug on the steel pan (if you have the time). It makes servicing the fluid about 110% easier and cleaner.

I use a large piece of cardboard (3' x 3') on the garage floor because the valve body will continue to just leak drops and drops of oil. I then recycle the cardboard and don't have to clean the floor...

Hope this helps,

Louis
