This week I stopped at my Dodge dealer and bought 5 qts of fluid so I could change it in my NV5600. (I've got an 03 QC 3500 HO DRW 3. 73 2 wheel drive with 23,000 miles and decided it was time I changed the fluid. ) I bought what the parts counter recommended, but didn't really read what the label said until I got home. Then, I noticed it says it is made especially for the NV3500 (fluid is MOPAR#4874464). I called the dealership and asked again if this was the right fluid to use. They said yes. They said their chart says this is the fluid for the NV3500 5 spd. and the NV5600 6 spd. , but that a different fluid is recommended for the NV4500 5 spd. Does everyone agree that I got the right fluid? (I haven't changed it yet. ) Doesn't it seem strange that a different fluid would be recommended for the NV4500? What do you other 6 spd owners use? Thanks.

Bill

PS This is only my second post and I don't know how to list my truck in my signature.

Appears to be the right part number, how much did you pay for it? I use Pennzoil Synchromesh ,available at Autozone and other fine establishments for $5-6 a qt. Others here use Redline's MTL. The 4500 does use another harder to find (more expensive) type of lube.

Thats the part # in my owners manual also. I'm using Royal Purple Syncromax in mine. p. s. signature set up is found in the User Control Panel from the forum drop down list.

Thanks for the replies. Its good to know I got the right stuff. I paid $8. 10/qt. for the fluid. I guess I'll go to Autozone next time. Incidentally, how many miles should I go before the next change? And thanks for the help on the signature. Now I'll see if it worked.

Try to do mine every 25-30 k or so, noticed the fluid was a whole lot cleaner looking then the first time I did it. Also I would be changing out the differential lube too at about the same time! Used lubrication Engineers LE 607 the first time around, not sure about this time, might see what the driveline shop has on its shelf, have to take it in for a leaking pinion shaft seal. Just noticed ut after 2300 miles in the last two days, hope this one does not turn out like my ol '97 did, couldn't keep a seal in it to save my @$$ ! Currently have 66k miles on mine now !

I just pick up transmission oil from dealer friday and paid $9. 90 a quart. I asked the same question about it saying it was for the NV 3500. I then looked in my owners manual and the part # for the oil was the same as what the dealer gave me.

From everything I've ever read on this board the 3500 and 5600 do take the same fluid, but the 4500 takes a different fluid.

Just wanted to corroborate the earlier evidence...

I changed it at around 5K, 10K, 15K and 30K miles. It seems to get a lot of powdered brass in it and shifting quality degrades for that or some other reason.

I installed the recommend Amsoil Brand lube in my NV-5600 6-speed, and now have over 41,000 on the truck,33,000 on the oil. Shifts are very nice and smooth... ... ... . even when it's cold.

Wayne I need a little education. Isn't HDD 5W-30 a crankcase oil? Is it ok for use in gearboxes as well?

Drew,

Yes you are correct, but this is what is used in the NV-5600. This is also the fluid recommendation from Amsoil Inc. This fluid is considered a GL-1 gear lube.

FYI--For many years now engine oils have been used in several standard (manual) transmission applications, and ATF has also been used in certain standard (manual) transmission applications as well. I remember in 1962, I purchased a new "Valiant" that required the use of ATF in the standard (manual) transmission.

While we are on the subject of ATF in manual transmissons; The new G56 six speed calls for ATF+4.

I also believe if you check into the penzoil... it is actually a penzoil motoroil with some additive package (or whatever) to be used in the 5600.

I just added the amsoil 5w30 HDD (10K miles on truck) and it is easier to shift and the transmission is less noisy.

well, if amsoil 5w30 works in the nv5600's, i wonder how mobil 1 5w30 would work in there... i've got loads [±50 liters] of that at home [gets used in everything we have except my truck]... maybe i might get brave and try it... [or just wuss out and put the factory fill back in when i change over again as i still have 5. 5qt's of it]
