How to take care of 5er hitch

I agree that a modified valve body would be a better choice than the pressure lock, it all depends on what your doing with the truck and what your want to do with it.

I had gauges when my transmission was stock and the transmission temps never went over 180 and in lockup would stay right around 160-170 degrees, even in the summer heat of 90 degrees. The only time it would get close to 200 was when I would back the camper into a tight area and had to manuver for some time, If I could back straight in then it would stay around 180, remember this is all stock. My transmission temp sending unit is located in the hot line comeing out of the transmission. Another interesting thing is my trucks transmission would run cooler in OD lock than in 3rd lock at highway cruiseing speeds. Also the above is taken with stage 1 injectors, but no transmission mods.

Ron,I notice that my transmission also runs cooler in Od than in drive. I thought it would run cooler in drive, due to straight 1 to 1 Ratio thru the transmission, than in OD where it has to spin another set of gears. Im suprised you dont get TC slippage in OD locked up with the Stage 1's. My TC slipped with just an EZ,when the trans was stock, under the right conditions.

Thanks for those suggestions folks.

I don't think I would need a mistery switch. The high temps I get are for short periods of time.

Another transmission guys told me the same thing. A shift kit will increase pressure and flow and that in itself could help a lot on transmission temps. If the kit increases TCC pressure also, then there really is no reason for the pressureloc device.

I was told many years ago by a friend of mine who was good transmission guy - retired now - that a shift kit will make the transmission last a lot longer because it reduces friction between shifts, in order to get that nice smooth shifting patern. You pay the price for comfort.

I'll be checking, but I would think a modified VB from whoever also includes some sort of "shift kit" built in, along with whatever fixes ails the Dodge transmission (drainback, oil flow, etc).

A new TC would also be nice, but I can get up to 3rd lockup in decent time without heating up the transmission while pulling.

With more pressure on the TCC, then a small power boost to be able to cruise over those hills should be no problems.

From the lack of responses I got on the pressureloc device question, I have to say not too many folks use it just for that purpose - shift kit or VB change is probably best way to go at it.

happy trailering...

goober,

The reason I put the pressure lock on was so I can hold lockup in 2nd gear with the mystery switch on climbing steep hills or mountains and keep trans temps down while maintaining 55-60 miles per hour at max rpm's, with just a modified valve body you can not do this.

EDIT:: There are boxes that work with the modified valve bodies automatically to do what i have explained above, but I went with the pressure lock for the reason I know what my pressures will be at at different throttle positions, always full pressure when TC is locked.

Snow man,

It surprised me too, but I climbed many hills with my foot to the floor and it held but when the speeds dropped to 65 MPH (from 70) then the PCM program would disengage lockup, so when I would start to decellerate and get close to 65 MPH on the speedo I would back out of the throttle a quarter inch or so to keep the transmission from unlocking, you can feel like a shift point on the foot peddle just right before it hits the floor, if I kept it there it would not come out of lockup and I would continue to climb the hills. This also worked when the speeds would not allow 70 MPH, I would just put the throttle down to the shift point and climb the hill until I slowed down too much then I would push the OD off button. After doing this for awhile I could judge the hills and terrain and if they where too long I would drop out of OD before the hills. Most of this pulling was in the bad lands of ND and I never had to shift out of OD once pulling them hills on I-94. This was without the transmission modifications or comp box just the injectors installed and the HP in my signature.

I should also point out that I have no preference in any bodies after market products, I have no personal interest in any of them. I use what suits me for today and when money becomes available and I think there is something better I use the next guys product. If money was available and I hadn't done my trans upgrade just a few months ago I would be looking real hard (doing my research) at the ATS set up, sounds real good to me at this point.
