I second the post about not repairing, but only replacing the case. That ear is mission critical to proper alignment of all components and can not be properly welded and still ensure proper alignment of the converter and front pump. My guess is that the dowl pin was mis-aligned and when they drew it down they broke the ear off. Your transmission will most likely not last an extended period of time in its current condition if there is any mis alignment. .
You can Tig weld Aluminum case's I have welded 572CI all aluminum engine hemi race blocks. If it is done right it will be ok . "If it were my trans and My mistake I could live with it" But I do see your complaint you took the job to them they are the "pros" They shouldn't make such mistakes . Espacally leaving in a lower bolt like that ,then ripping the trans out of the truck ... . (Gee why was it so stuck ? ) any hoo If they wont go for the new case idea I would hit em for atleast some compensation . Like cash back for the difference of a new case.
