hi all,

this is my first post. i bought my 96 last may, and had no problems until i took it swimming!:D , well let me explain, a little razzing from a friend, and i drove my truck into a mud (water) hole. the water went over the bottom of the door by about 3 in. after it came out the transmission was slipping. i checked the fluid's and ,yep water in the transmission fluid. i had to drive about 10 miles before i could change to fluid and filter(auto).

the left side of the pan's bolt were only finger tight, well i changed the fluid 3 times in 2 days before the fluid was completely clear (red) again. that was about 3 weeks ago. about 4 days ago after pulling my trailer (15ft cargo)

now the transmission slips for about 30 feet from a dead stop, before i catches up. if i floor it it seems to catch quicker. it doesnt slip at all in the other gears. only from a dead stop? no burnt clutch smell in the fluid. it will slip worse when i shift from reverse into forward,

ive kept constant check on trans fluid level. the fluid level was slightly below max level when i first noticed the problem. i am now running a half a quart above level. it seemed to tone it down. but it still slips.

Don't use Lube Guard it's a friction modifier, it will cause increased slippage. If anything get a more aggressive oil like a redline. Lube Guard is used if you have a clutch chatter, which is the resistance to slippage.

ive checked it in neutral, i've even chocked the tires and checked it in drive. it is slightly above the max fill line.

i'm running ATF+.

ive gotten some LUCAS transmission fluid, it's supposed to stop slipping, late shifts, etc...

should i try it or maybe something else?

First of all I have to warn against most off the shelf additives. Some of them contain chemicals that swell seals and keep swelling, along with drawing moisture out of the air which leads to more rust and more parts to be replaced. The clutches and bands lining are bonded with an adhesive that does not go well with water. That along with the heat of the trans will usually cause the clutches and such to start coming apart. The moisture gets into the lining, displacing the fluid they run in and when the clutch gets hot from slipping etc, the fluid then boils out causing the separation of the clutch. I have known a few folks that have gotten lucky by changing their fluid several times like this. However they are few. If the slipping persists, don't wait too long to take corrective action. The longer you wait the more damage that can be done. As we all know, the trans will not heal itself. If there is a bright side, this gives a good excuse to do the upgrade sooner.

do you think i could get away with just replacing the clutch?

ive got someone who can do minor transmission repairs like clutches, he just cant handle the computer parts.

if their are any parts i should upgrade, or replace while the transmission is out, please let me know!!

transmission HANGIN ON!!!

well guys, its been over one month and the transmission is still hangin in there.

i've learned that if i put the truck in 1 st gear it will not slip. doesnt make sense does it?

but it works. if anyone knows what could cause this, please let me know

Sounds like a damaged overrunning clutch. When the shift lever is in D or 2, and the transmission is in 1st gear an overrunning clutch is all that is propelling the transmission. When you pull the lever down into "1", the low/reverse band comes on.

If it slips only in first gear with the shift indicator in 2 or D, but never slips in manual low, that would be my diagnosis.

You would have to completely disassemble the transmission to get to it because it's in the very back.

Good luck,

Chris

thanks for the replys' guys!

after i thought things couldnt get any worse,(one month ago) i added some lucas transmission conditioner, it did help.

i'm just buying time until i decide what to do, get a factory reman, get a transmission from dtt, bd-power, or just have this one rebuilt.

any advice on trannys?

 Here we go again. I went with DTT, and couldn't be happier. There are guys that went with ATS, and are also happy. I would stay away from BD, but there are some here that are happy with them too, just not very many.

Whatever you do, don't just get that one rebuilt by anyone or some generic reman. Some of the aftermarket trannies are more money, but you get what you pay for, or in the case of a factory rebuild, a lot less. Check out www.dieseltrans.com for info on DTT. I don't know ATS's site.

Good luck!

Chris
