This TBS is probably what is happening. Its not really for a Cummins powered truck, but good tech info:
http://dodgeram.org/tech/tsb/1994/21-14-94.htm

I personally have had my speed sensor out 3 or 4 times since the truck was new to change the pinion gear for the speedometer. Still have the original O-ring on the adapter. Never saw the slighest drip.

The TSB says transmission fluid could weep through the actual Speed Sensor, or its leaking past the O-Ring. I don't know which it is, but a new O-ring is 10 cents.

Sounds like you have got a couple of bad speed sensor adapters that don't last very long before they leak transmission fluid. ?

My speed sensor is 7 years old and has 103,000 miles on it. No leaks yet. #ad

Thanks Hemi!
I made a fateful decision today: I WILL SERVICE MY OWN transmission FROM NOW ON!
I do everything else on my truck, why not that? On what I spent today ($111. 95!), I could have bought a Mopar transmission pan, with drain plug. Oh well, live and learn!

I dropped my truck off this morning for it's 10k mile transmission service. Get a call from the shop, says my "speed sensor" is leaking. Must replace it, says he. This is the second one in a year. Do these things REALLY only last 20k miles? And why don't I see it leaking? I've used this shop for many years, and I've always trusted them. But, I'm a little worried now...

If you have a leak at the speedo sender it is most likely the O-ring.
TIP--get a new o ring--use starting fluid to clean lube off seender body and o ring grove--install new o-ring slip a small nail under it and rotate around 360 deg of the body (to remove the twist of o-ring)then before instalation into the transmission--Apply a coating of sealicone bath tup caulk (air cure). Leak is gone forever.
This o-ring has a habbit of cracking?breaking and for those not checking the lube every oil change has wiped out a transmission.
It is not enouth to leave tracks on the floor ,just wet on the sensor.
