I just installed a transmission temp gauge and after reading a few old posts here I decided to just remove the stock sensor and use that port. OD seems to still work fine and I will never be near 270* anyway so figured it was safe to remove.



It felt like the probe was just starting to bottom out as it became tight so I didn't really crank it down like I normally would an NPT fitting. My question is has anyone else had a problem with this setup and could it affect the fluid flow and transmission function with the probe in that deep? I took it for a test drive and everything seemed fine, but it seems like that probe would block the fluid flow too much. :confused:
 
I'd be worried if the probe on mine stuck in far enough to be in the tube, the probe on mine is very short, didn't stick into the tube, you could see about getting some sort of pipe fitting that would space it out so that the tip of the probe was just to the outside of the tube, that would be safer than having it across the tube. And about that 270degrees, I though the same thing until I tried running fast towing, my transmission stays around 200 until I'm towing and try to push it much faster than 70 on an uphill grade, then I have to let off as it nears 250, I think it would be very easy to get to 270 if you aren't paying attention to the gauge.

You guys have made a good point. The most accurate method pf placement is there. The exact location you mentioned. However please keep in mind that if you have a large/long bulb, it will be blocking or partly blocking the fluid flow. This same senario was mentioned about two weeks ago when one fellow said that you have to place the bulb directly in the path of the fluid flow... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... yeah, but most folks install the sensor bulb in the PAN.



Bottom line is: do NOT block the flow... the OEM sensor is wothless... ... . don't overheat the oil.

So even if the transmission is running cool and still functioning correctly, you think I should change the setup? I'm assuming if the transmission isn't overheating and still shifts the same, what harm could it possibly be doing?
 
It might only be running cool because no hot fluid is making it to the sensor because the tube is blocked?? I would want as much flow towards the coolers as possible.
 
I think the fluid is flowing fine because the gauge does fluctuate like you would expect with city and highway driving. If it was blocked I think the temp would only increase.
 
What you might find is that when you actually NEED the full capacity of the cooler, you won't get it. Around town is one thing, honkin' up a grade with something in tow is another.

Good point. I'm going to get a couple pieces and extend it out a little. ;)
