Have a 1999 Dully, automatic, 3500 quad cab, Cummins diesel which I purchased new. Has 162,000 miles.

Had trouble with the transmission shifting back and forth between about 42. 5 mph and 50 mph.

HAD THE TRANSMISSION AND CONVERTER REBUILT. Now it shifts 2 or 3 times between 42. 5 and 50 mph when it is hot outside 85f and up, and going up a slight grade (no hills hereabouts in Virginia Beach). It does not do this when the OD is off. Took it back and the batteries were changed, the grounding checked, and "flashed".

Worked fine for about 300 miels and the same thing started,

The work was done by a reputable firm which advertises in TRD.

Any suggestions?

Ken Watts :) :)

My 2001 ran great until two weeks ago; it started to do the shifting back and forth thing between 40 and 50 mph. I called DTT the next morning and ordered a noise filter from them. The filter arrived in a couple of days. Installation wasn't too challenging: two wires. Now, the transmission shifts better than new. Why the electrical noise started suddenly after 171,000 miles is beyond me but the filter was all that was needed to fix the problem.

You can also try separating the alternator wire out of the loom on the front of the engine. There are multiple threads on the topic, do a search.

Godspeed,
Trent

Been there, Done that. I Also wraped the Ground Wire from the RH batt to the Alt. with alumnium foil or mesh, Grounding it to the Alt. This will "clean up" the Noise from the Alt into the PCM circuit. This was covered in the TDR last year.

This issue and the cause/cure really needs to be STICKIED.

Just about every new member will ask the same question. Many long time menbers will review it too.

How about it MODS?

In reading this thread, I was surprised that there is not an entry in 24V FAQ about this problem. THere are a lot of threads here about different fixes.

I am not able to follow the link that moose00 posted.

I do think an entry in FAQ is appropriate and I will persue getting together some of the posts and putting them there.

PM me if you want to suggest particulatr posts or have questions or comments.

Good luck

Sincere thanks to mall that replied relative to the shifting back and forth between 40 & 50 MPH (199 3500 Ram). A shielded wire was installed from the alternator to the PCM (?). It has worked so far and shifts smoothly. Hopefully at 90 degrees outside temperature it will still work. Again thanks to all!!! Ken Watts
