Hello- I just read the new TDR and saw a question about the transmission not shifting into or out of OD. My problem is a little different. I have a 1998 3500, 4 WD. When I start the truck up, and drive into town (about 13 miles of staright driving, no stops) the truck will shift into OD when the tramsmission is cold. I have all gauges installed, so my transmission temp is monitored. At the first stop sign, when I accelerate, the truck will not shift into OD at all. I have checked the fluid level, its good. The fluid does not smell burnt. The OD button is and has been intermittent. When I read my MX manual, it said the transmission will not shift out of OD until the transmission temp reaches 148 F. I then try the OD button and it seems to be intermittent as compared to when I bought the truck. Could it be that simple? What else can I check?

Thanks.

Kenny

could be the switch. another possibility is the sensor on the tail end of the od case left hand side. Had to replace mine fror that reason. Simple to change not expensive. AME /A/P 30 years wrenching airplanes. Hope this helps.

Looking at You tube videos, seems like it is a common problem with these sensors. And they are inside the transmission pan? Correct? Should I replace both of the sensors??

Not trying to run you off, but you would probably get much more information if you went to the 12 valve engine and transmission forum. The transmission in your truck and the ones in the third gen trucks are much different.

Hey Kenny,
Before investing too much time and money pop the OD button out of the end of the shift lever and clean the switch contacts of all the Armorall/dust/dirt accumulation. That corrected my intermittant OD switch operation. Cheap start.
