Just got back from 5138 mile jaunt through Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. MANY thanks to member duluth diesel in the Duluth area who gave us info on ship tours and other attractions. Duluth was a full plate of fun. Got a tour through an ore ship, the William Irvin, a retired tug, and a retired Coasty Cutter. I mean, these were excellent tours, through the entire vessel. Saw the center lift bridge, and lunched at Famous Dave's BBQ. If any of you plan to be in that direction, don't miss Duluth. Trouble is, we need to spend summer in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Fell in love with it all over again. Grand Marais is still the sweetest little town in the country. Funny accents, though. Hard to understand some of the folks!

Great pasties, whitefish and baked stuff. I wanna go back!!!!

The center lift bridge is a great place to watch the ore boats. My folks used to take us camping up that way and we'd usually stop in Duluth for most of a day on the way home, near the twin cities.

Our accents aren't THAT funny :D

Us fudgies love to wander up to the U. P. , Yah-heh. Wife and I traveled up to Mackinaw City, over to Mack. Island for a day, on to Munising and Pictured Rocks , then Taquamenon Falls, on up to Whitefish Point and the shipwreck museum. Haven't been across the bridge for about 30 years or so. I had forgot how beautiful the Upper Peninsula is. We only spent a couple of days up there, but we are ready for a return visit.

Copperharbor area is on our must see list.

I sailed for US Steel for three seasons. I always loved the City of Duluth. The railroad museum is one of my Favorites. Always enjoyed the watering holes on both the Duluth and Superior sides too! :D

I usually try and make it to the UP at LEAST once a year (my Dad is a Yooper). I sure hope I can get this damn coach put back together in time to make at least ONE trip with it this year! :( Karen and I have both decided to make it an annual tradition to go away for an extended weekend someplace the week after Labor Day.

Hey ol ron, glad the info helped you out! I fell in love with the Duluth area back in 1997 and never left! Last Wednesday I had to drive up to Grand Portage for work, and on the way back south, I was sure to stop at Sven and Ole's Pizza in Grand Marais.

I went to school up MTU. My two favorite quotes from up there are "Holy wah, eh?!" and "friggin' A, eh?"

Beautilful area, lots of great wheelin', impressive remains of the copper industry, and some cool ship wrecks to dive on. And of course, there are the people. Some are very proud of the fact that they "have never been south of the bridge", and while most talk about the Mackinaw bridge, some were talking about the lift bridge in Houghton!

hey billy D, a fellow tech grad!

I fell in love with the place, someday I'm going to quit this high stess job I have now, buy a snowplow and move up there to live. When I went to school there I ended up hanging out with a bunch of locals, and the people are so much more genuine.

well for gol durn sakes dere hey dey ought to be genuine doncha know... .

Duluth Trip

MDietrich,

I went to school at UMD and you are right, there is plenty to see up there.

Just make sure if you return in the winter you have the right apperal. :D

I once thought Duluth was just snowy as heck. Then I spent some time at Mich. Tech (I was born there), there is no comparison. The up just DUMPS snow constantly.

What the heck is the average snowfall there? Like 300" per season?

I wish we would of had more time to spend in Duluth. We got into the area on the 27th and went up the coast on 61 to Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. Came back and camped in Two Harbors that night, goofed around at the Lighthouse and breakwater on the 28th, then went into Duluth that afternoon. When it started to rain we left for Brainard.

We will defiantly came back to the area to stay for more than one night!

My dad was born and raised in Duluth. He had an uncle who used to operate the lift bridge. He said he and his friends would stand underneath those huge counterweights and reach up and touch the bottoms of them when they came down as the bridge went up.

Ol Ron,

Glad you enjoyed your trip! I grew up in Duluth (seven blocks up from the mouth of the Lester River) and I still never get tired of looking at the ships passing under the bridge. Hope you made it to Sammy's Pizza and Grandma's while you were there. It really wasn't that long ago when the area around Canal Park was all industrial and looked much different then it does today.
