How do you know if your transfer pump is going out with out putting a guage on it? I have 50,000 miles on my 98, It runs fine, but I have heard that you could sill run ok even if the transfer pump is not working well. Is the transfer pump covered under the engine warrenty? I don't want to take it to a dealer and have him charge me $50 just to check out my pump.

Take the money the dealer would charge you to check it, and buy a Fuel pressure gauge. I don't mean a in dash type, just a handhelp tester with about 3 foot of hose. I bought just the gauge, hose and adaptor and made my own setup. Look at the top of the fuel filter, you will see 2 brass plugs. That is the size fitting you want.

Plug in your gauge, stick it under the wiper and go for a drive. You don't want to see the pressure going under about 8 while running hard. I used to see 0 in 2 and 3 at WOT, but still had 12 at idle. The dealer agreed the pump was bad and installed a new one. ON the 98, the pump is covered by the 80,000 mile HD diesel emissions warrantee.

I'll agree with TowPro, at 10 thou miles on my truck my pump went out and we put a guage on it and it was showing 0 psi at WOT. Now the truck has 29 thou on it and it's gone again. This time I'm goin a different route as to which pump I put on it. I'm gettin tired of puttin stock replacement pumps on every 10-15 thou. If it is your pump then you need to have it replaced as soon as possible b/c without any pressure and lubrication goin to your injection pump you'll seize it up quicker than I don't know what b/c you're running power mods on your truck. Good Luck !

You could plumb it to the drain tube on the filter to check pressure if you don't want to buy a fitting and install it permanently. I am very happy with a perm install and use it to determine when to change fuel filters. That alone will save the cost of the guage in the long run. JMO
