My truck just died, like you shut off the fuel. Was shifting from 2nd to 3rd, and when I let out on the clutch I had no power. Pushed in on the clutch and reved it up, but the motor had died. Will not restart. Checked all the fuses, disconnected the ez and TST power-max 3 fueling box. I have 15 lbs presure at the filter. Cranks over fine, but will not start. I have 12 volts at the VP44. What can it be?

98. 5's have the old old vp44's.

In my opinion your VP44 just died.

I would double check all of your electrical connections, and check that the 2 PCM harnesses are connected properly.

If you are feeling brave, give this a try. There is a test you can perform on the VP-44 to see if it's working. You apply a 12 vdc signal to pin 7 and grounding pin 6 on the VP44. Then start the truck. If it runs, it will be at idle. If it doesn't run, then you're SOL and you might be needing a new pump. Lotsa luck and keep us posted.

TNT, That sure does sound familiar! When my VP-44 went out, it did the same thing. Just felt like it missed once when I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd, and then it was dead. Mine also had good fuel pressure, so you can't always count on that.

Maybe yours will turn out to be something simple, but it sounds just like my pump failure. Having been there, I feel your pain.

Pump is KO'd

Thanks for all the input. I checked everything that I can think of. (electrically and mechanically) I even tried jumpering 12 V to pin 7 and grounding pin 6 on the VP44. Nothing. The pump makes a clicking sound, but it still won't start. It sure looks like the inj pump crapped out on me. I'm just glad I wasn't further from home.

Best advice now is if the Dealer won't replace it (probably won't because of fueling mods even though we KNOW that's not the cause), get a call off to Piers or DD or a local Cummins Shop (Cummins Great Lakes) and replace it yourself. The dealer is gonna want entirely too much ($3-4k) for the pump. You should be able to get one for around $1500. I'm sure that if you ask nice, some TDR members around you will give you a hand. Good luck.

my sympathies....

this is my nightmare... ... ... .....

but here is a question for those more learned than myself... .

how tough ($$$) is it to to a P7100. i figure a time like this would be the time to do it (if it isn't covered by warranty).

other than a new cam, what is involved? how would it be timed? how much would it cost?

just wondering.

Did you check the Fuel for water or gasoline ? Bleed the lines ? Remember the member that had a rag stuffed in the intake air horn. Check the filter ? air hose's ? check every thing no matter if you did it yesterday . Could be some thing small that could be a big problem . seems like not that many miles on the pump, to do no go . Hope some on can think of some thing to check LOL Ron in LOUISVILLE KY :D

Great news

Very pleasant experience at the dealer. They replaced my injection pump in 2 days. Full warranty coverage! Although they warned me if I every thought about bombing my truck, they could tell by hooking up their scanner. Ha Ha Ha:D :D :D

Try the signature again

The signature thing didn't work, I'll try again. Just in case I'll copy and paste it in also.
