I'm trying to help a buddy from another forum site (guns and what not) with his 2000 2500, 4x4 5sp that is giving him trouble after a VP change. Here is a cut and paste of his post from the other site. If anyone has any ideas let me know and I will pass them on. I suggested checking the wireing for the grid heaters,New MAP and IAT, changing out starter contacts/plunger and stuff like that.
I've been over the hill and through the woods with this old truck, and it hasn't given me any problems outside of a new clutch at 200k and some suspension consumables. Now, I am sitting at 220K and it won't run.
A few months ago, the injector pump died and I decided that would be a good time to upgrade the fuel system as well to a more reliable lift pump.
I installed an injector pump and an AirDog 100gph fuel pump/water separator and an Edge Juice w Attitude monitor for fuel pressure/etc for engine safety. I probably should have gotten a gauge set, but the edge system looks cool and the truck has had one installed in the past. After priming it up it ran fine for a little bit, albeit with poor power.
I checked the codes, and it was throwing a turbo overboost code and getting about 13-15mpg. If I cleared the code and drove it, the code would pop right back up. I usually get 18mpg out of the truck.
I installed the edge juice, and the unit would not connect to the truck, through working with edge tech support they pretty much shipped me a new chip piece by piece until everything had been changed out. I am confident that the chip/monitor isn't to blame for it not connecting. The Edge can't see the trucks data port. Nobody online has had this issue, and edge has not admitted to seeing this issue before. I can only conclude that my truck is to blame.
Now for the weird part. After installing the VP44 lift pump, which has no connection to the electrical system outside of the engine fuel controller, the truck intermittently blows the 20A fuse for the starter relay. I changed the relay with another identical relay from a working system on the truck and replaced the fuse. I suppose it is possible that the truck has suddenly developed a bad starter or ignition switch, but I feel that is unlikely due to the truck running so well for so long.
As it is now, the truck runs, but will blow the 20A starter fuse every time you turn it over before the "Wait to start" heater grid light goes out and intermittently when you do not. Could this be caused by a bad connection with the batteries?
Any ideas would be appreciated. When I get the time I am going to pull the injector pump to check that I installed the key way correctly in the timing gear, and check all the electrical connections that I can, but I really feel I am chasing my tail.
Thanks in advance guys.
Thanks J-
