Can someone explain this?

I took my truck to the dealer for a transmission problem.

I was having my clutch put in a week after BOMBing the the mule to he!! and back and when the mechanic removed the shifter he found a whole bunch of brass filings. The top of the transmission looked like concentrated goldschlager and it was a full qt low on oil. I was watching so while they were getting the flywheel surfaced I called my dealer and explained the problem. He asked if I had had any problems shifting. I had a problem when it was new. . first thing in the morning it would grind 3-4 shifts unless you put the clutch to the floor.

He agreed to take care of the transmission under warranty. I think it was because I'd been in his shop a few days before and he knew I know my truck in and out.

It got really cold the next week. . 6*F. . BRRRRRR!! and the problem came back only a lot worse than ever.

Well I finally got it to them to get it fixed and they said there was a TSB on the NV5600 ... TSB 21-009-01. I get the truck back friday.

I was wondering if I could fiind out more about it. I tried dodgeram.org with no luck.

Does anybody else have a clue? I thought every other ETH owner would want to know about the TSB.

I got mine to the dealer w/250 mi left on the warranty. I'd hate to see someone buy a transmission.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark I called A buddy at the dealership I used to work at and gave him the TSB # he is going to get back to me tomorrow. If it is a good # I will even have a copy of it tomorrow.

TSB 21-009-01

Mark... I don't have a scanner so I can't put on this screen... If you have a fax I can fax a copy to you let me know!!!!

The bulletin involves Ram Trucks manufactured prior to March 17,2001 and equipped with the NV 5600 6-speed , Heavy duty transmission.

Discussion: Customers may experience a shifter vibration (commonly) refered to as gear clash of the shift knob when shifting from one gear to another between 2500 and 3500 RPM after a cold start up. This condition is most evident when ambient temperatures are at or near 0 degrees C (32 degrees F) but can occur at warmer temperatures as well. The condition is most often reported on the 3rd to 4th gear shifting, but can occur in the other shift ranges as well. The problem can be verfied by assuring the transmission is at ambient temperture, vehicle moving and, with the engine at 2500 to 3500 RPM, shifting into and out of gear ranges.

Transmission replacements to address this issue have been excessive, partly due to the need for a 20-ton press to disassemble the countershaft assembly. If such a press is available, rebuilding the countershaft assembly is prefered. In the event a press is not available, a new countershaft assembly (pn 05073361AA) has been made available.

The bullentin goes on about the procedures to use .....

Mark... . the bottom line is this is an extensive repair/fix as the transmission has to be taken out ... ... Tks, for bringing it to my attention as I have a 2001 6-sp...

Mine does that gear grindin' to btwn. 3&4, But cause' I have over 50,000 miles and no extendended warenty am I Screwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwed!?

This is what a good buddy is, his printer was broken so he hand wrote the whole TSB then re typed it. Bassically it say gear clash above 2500 RPM worse when cold, and they replace one of the shafts with a rebuilt unit becuase nobody has the 20 ton press to do it in thier shop. Hope this helps.

Talk to the dealer you bought it from... With a TSB out, and if it caused your problems, maybe they'll fix it... Maybe not, but it's a free call... ;)

Yea, I'll have to talk to them,I'm in kinda good over there they warented some other things in the past that were of of warenty. Then again, they weren't very expensive parts, I'll just have to see.

If you are out of warranty and are ahving problems such as this with a TSB issued, ask for a "goodwill" settlement. Usually means mfg with cover 50% of the cost. I have done this several times in the past with various mfgrs, and have never been turned down. Usually a letter to the efect of how much you like the truck & how well it was taken care of in a very humble tone does the trick.

Good luck withthe problem.

The parts for my truck didn't come in. They brought the truck back so I could use it on the weekend.

I guess I'm lucky and have a good dealer. They have two certified diesel mechanics. Last time I was in they were planning new training for them. The Svc Mgr seems to have his head on right.

The dealer kept a key so all I have to do is park it on the lot on sunday eve.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

3-4 for me

It was about -6c/20f this morning. I Shifted purposely at high rpms with transmission cold (2500-2800) and I have a 3-4 grind pretty bad. Got hard grinds under moderate shifting pull into 4th. Once it warms up fully the 3-4 shift is good. :(

Normally I don't shift above 2000 until the truck and transmission warms up so I didn't pay too much attention to the occasional minor grind that was happening. Not sure if I feel good or bad about finding this thread.

Almost new

I've only had my truck 3 months with a whopping 6600km on it. I'll talk to the dealer on Monday and see what they say. Once it warms up it shifts fine and I can't get it to grind, but still I don't like it shredding metal bits into the transmission while it's cold. Over 2500rpm I had to shift extremely gently to avoid grinding this morning.
