Tuesday Dumb tire question E vs D rated and there numbers

I know this seems pretty elementary to most but while searching for tires today i am came across two different sizes that i question what it means

These are the Goodyear DuraTrac



LT265/70R17 121Q BSL 3,195@80

LT285/70R17 121Q OWL 3,195@65



From what i understand the first size is load range E and second Load range D. I would like to go with the second size but i have always run a load range E and wondered what the downfall of running the LT285/70R17 if it has the same weight capacity.

Depends on your driving, LR D has softer sidewalls so if you tow heavy or drive agressive I'd run LR E, I personally have had LR D for 7 years with no problems, the ride is significantly softer and still tow great up to about 8k, some old timers will tell you your an idiot to run anything less then E rated, A good high quality D ( not BFG A/T's) will will be trouble free tire.

You will notice a difference in ride and handling.



Personally I suggest you stay with the "E"'s but there are folks like AE that have had no issues with "D"'s.

As I said though how you use your truck definitely has a factor, im not saying D is for everyone, DD's maybe but thats a a whole nother subject :-laf . I also know of a very common D rated tire that has caused a lot of problems that many people refuse to belive it could be the tire, kinda like the 5. 7 diesel, people tried it once and wont try it again

hackengineering : I dont know how they determin the rating of a tire but many of the LR: D tires Ive had are rated higher then E, the 37" yokos are rated at 3525lbs and they toyos im running right now are 3640lbs, its weird.
 
Huge reduction in tailwag going from a D-rated 285-75-16 BFG AT to the same sized Toyo M-55, E rated tire on my 2nd gen w/popup.



That being said,I got a flat Saturday on I-5 with my Toyo E-rated MT's. Total tire carnage before I could escape to the shoulder. No tire's impervious to the almighty puncture. Expensive day.

Whoa, a Toyo MT got a flat??????? Man those are some seriously tough tires! How do you like those for handling and road noise?
 
Yea the Toyos are monsters... ... ..... I have yet to hurt one even in Mexico showing Brad my Tail lights :-laf

Brad or Prozac??? Seem to be two different people there, I know BJ Baldwin did the whole SF250 and 3 other races with no flats with the Toyo MT's
 
I could not run the BFG d rated tires on my 05 when it was brand new but the toyo d rated worked fine... ... ..... there are differences between brands
