When you mash the accellerator pedal real hard, from a stop, it causes a lot of fuel to burn fast, which creates a lot of exhaust, which in turn spins the turbo real fast, which causes high boost pressure to buildup in the intercooler and tubes and hoses. Then if you suddenly let your foot off of the pedal, all that built-up pressure has no place to go except BACKWARDS through the turbo. And it does, causing the turbo to have to suddenly stop and then spin backwards. This places excessive forces on the turbo shafts and bearings and has caused expensive failures.
