Yeah, that was one reason I bought the injectors, so I wouldn't have to tow with the box on. Without the Edge on the egt's are no problem. But boy do I love the pulling power with the box. You no how it is, once you've popped you just can't stop:D . I talked to Piers and he recommended his refined HX40 to lower egt's about 175deg. Now if I can pull the trigger on the $$$. Bombs Away:D :D :D

With just a stock Hx40, DD3's and my TST powermax3 Competition set on level 5, I was able to tow 8000lbs. with no EGT worries. Piers' modified Hx40 will perform even better than a stock Hx40, and be more reliable, to boot... .

It's fun hammering uphill at 75-80mph, leaving Fords and Chevvies slowly panting their way to the top in the gravel lane...

If you really want to tow with mods the B1 is the way to go. I've seev 3-400* drops and spool up better than stock. . box on or off. I usually put it on 1/1 to control smoke. The truck is just a blast and EGT worries are a thing of the past.

Yogibear bought it just for towing. He delivers big 5ers all over the country. I didn't believe him til I installed mine. It has the manners you'd expect from an OEM and the power of a big rig... 400+hp and 1000+ftlbs!!!

Thanks for the good post Mark. Sounds like for my money the B1 should be the best way to tow. A little more spent now could save me a whole lot more later.

Kurt?

Only a few months... ... ... .

However, his turbo guru (the one that builds them) has been doing this for many years. He told me once, but I forgot the exact number, Kurt will have to answer that one.

Just like Adam uses Bell turbo for his turbo work.

Kurts turbo guy has been at it for 15-20 yrs I think. . Long enough I don't worry about it.

Kurt got with him to help out w/his performance 'issues' in diesel performance. I think they've done well.

Who said Kurt was building the turbos???

Kurt happened to befriend a curmudgeonly turbo charger wizard down in the southwest one day. And after a while, the wizard told Kurt about his favorite turbo which had seen a fair amount of time in racing applications. Mostly on big block chevys in drag boats I believe. The curmudgeonly wizard gave KK one of the magic turbos to try on his truck about the time we were in Tulare. Well KK knawed and filed and sawed on the new turbo until he was able to fit it onto his truck and give it a run. I remember this scene from about 3AM Saturday night in the RV area:) HEheheee

Kurt's truck is full of instrumentation that no one else would would of thought of. The purpose is to R&D turbos. He has Fluke meters stacked in a row measuring temps pre, post, prior, and pressures pre, post, this way and that way. There is some real scientific testing being done on his products as you can see. The B1 is no exception.

I suggest potential purchasers pay close attention to the testemonials. The important thing is how well it works. The B1 works!!!

HVAC... :D

Good to see ya... I just keep getting more and more interested in this huffer.

Curious as to how many are run w/ the OEM manifold (if any) or if everyone's gone to the TST 2piece while tearing things down?

MaX

Stock exhaust manifold here. Lovin it Lovin it Lovin it. I swear after I got a couple hundred miles on this thing it is even getting quicker. Do turbos have to break in???

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I see Mojo has a K&N filter. How do those do compared to the BHAF setup for dropping EGT's?

Thanks,

Dave.

I think everbody is running stock manifolds. With the exception of the downpipe its a bolt in operation. Installing the turbo takes less than an hour. The down pipe was a different story. I fabed mine inplace using my HX35 pipe.

Later,

Mark

Exhaust Manifolds

Rubberneck, never heard anything definitive about turbo breakin. Sounds like another subject for us to debate.

It's probably the electric motor within the turbo breaking in:) Remember the wires you hooked up when you installed it? Hehe :p

Max, everybody is running the stock manifold. There is no performance advantage to the aftermarket markets that I am aware of.

I've got the 3 piece ATS on my trk. Put it on when we installed the KwikSpool Turbo. No perf. advantage, just a little preventative Maint.

Larry

I can't tell you if the K&N helped with egt's. When I put that on the truck was stock except for the 275 injectors. I did see a decrease in egt's and quicker cool down with the Air Bulldog hood. This also REALLY helped airflow, before when I was towing the filter minder would pull down 25% even if it was just cleaned, this is with holes in the airbox. Not anymore, the filter minder never has moved and the filter has been plenty dirty at times.

What about turbo break in w/non api certified synthetic oil?... oh don?... . don????:);):p:-laf:-laf

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. . on an over boosted overfueled engine using extended drains:rolleyes:  :p

Since you asked!!:D My first experiance with Turbos was in 1981? when I helped build a custom turbo install for a Harley. That hooked me on boost! Then I worked for a few years in a Big Truck Garage and fell in love with the Cummins. From there I played with Turbos on a Jap car or two (280 ZX) and worked as the GSE Maintenance Manager at a Aviation Based company for ten years. There I was able to play with some Air Racers (18 Cylinder SuperCharged & Turbo Charged = FUN!!). Around that time ('84) was when I met Art N. He is my Gurus Partner and is in charge of the the Gassers. I built a custom Turbo kit for my 63 Chev PU with a 292 L6. It produced 350HP at around 3000 RPM... . I ran over 21 Psi of boost with Unleaded/AVgas mixed & then added injected water/methanol (My Design). Normal boost for gassers is 7-10 psi. I had oringed the block, Stainless Intake,Titanium exhaust valves, Huge valve springs ETC... ... It had a Built Auto and was a ROCKET - (Vet Eater!)

Then patiently waited for the day I could afford a CTD Dodge pickup. Soon after meeting HVAC, Piers, Joe D..... I had this Big problem!!! Lots of Fuel & HP, Rapidly balding Tires, and a smoked Clutch not to mention Nuclear EGT Temps..... Seeing the need for a better Turbo I went back and Hooked up with Ken (Art's Partner) He has the Diesel related Turbo Injection business and we started with the KwikSpool turbo... ... Awsome Turbo. . No Lag... But is too light duty for the Abuse we give turbo above 350HP and running 13 sec ET's with 4 ton Pickups. So we went back to the Drawing Board to Build a HD Turbo for 400 to 600+ HP. During even the early R&D I could not believe the results I was getting. After some Housing changes and modifications we ended up with the B-1. It is all that we expected and more. It is spooling great even on low HP trucks (300) and egts are dropping 400+/- Deg's on the High HP trucks. I love being able to tow with over 400 Hp and not having to watch the EGT gauge!

Kurt:cool:

P. S. If Mark Kendrick can install one / Fabing the Down pipe... ... Anyone can!!#ad
:D

So Kurt, how much will it lower my temps (pegged pyro in a few seconds)? The pyro goes up almost as fast as the tach. :{ I know I am nowhere near 400 hp. Probably be around 325 with the B1.
