What is the recommended way to clean the oil that has built up on my turbo blades? If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that you are not to touch the blades. Is this correct? Is there a cleaning solution I can use?
 
Get rid of your oiled filter.........

And put a BHAF on. Might want to check your IAT sensor too. Mine was pretty oily till I got rid of the K & N.

I just pulled the hose off of my turbo. I have about 2500 miles on since installing the K&N and my turbo blades are coated in oil. There is no visible dirt in the hose or turbo, but I don't like the oil.
 
BHAF????

If the solution to oil on the blades is to "get rid of the oiled filter," what are some recommendations on alternatives? (ie, BHAF, paper filter... ... . )
 
I wouldn’t be worried about just cleaning the turbo blades. How about the entire induction system? I’d hate for the oil gunk to choke the intercooler. Maybe some kind of cleaning spray you could spray in there while the engine is running. ;):D I wouldn’t be the first on my block to try that though!!! :eek:
 
BHAF is........

A high flow paper filter that takes the place of the stock air box. If you get the prefilter washable sock it's as good as a permanent filter.



Several people make heat shields you can use with these also. Do a search and you'll find lots of info.



There are higher flowing filters but they are all the oiled type.

Cleaning turbo blades and internal race. I do it the same way I clean my match rifles.

Lots of quality Q-Tips and clean Lacquer Thinner. (no I don't use Laq. thinner on my guns) Just "dab-wet" a Q-tip and carefully swap-clean each blade. Watch closely not to shred Q-tip on sharp or ruff edges that would tear the cotton and leave a wad-o-fluff where it should not be. Keep in mind industrial Laq. thinner is not as pure as Automotive grade but in this case of "just cleaning" the cheap industrial grade is fine.

This is done in a carefull manner, Laq. thinner evaporates so quickly you won't have any worry about Laq. thinner fumes causing an explosion when you start your ISB.

Doing this your first time really sheds some light on just how much gunk gets by your "chosen-style" of filter.

This is sort of a military type "white-glove" inspection of your steel. So... straighten up soldier... . your blades are filthy!!! Drop and give me twenty!:D

Any Fleetgaurd distributor can get the air filter. The sock is from Outerwears at the address above. Someone here called them and they've been making em ever since. They do fade over time. Mine don't look that bright anymore.



I changed the oil today and decided to clean the filter. The sock is cool because dirt doesn't hardly stick to it. It stops it from getting to the filter then falls off when theres no suction. Some dust gets through but minor. Took compressor and aired off the filter and after 10K miles there was hardly any dust.



Well worth the money for a non oiled filter set up.

I remember when I changed from a K&N filter to the BHAF the inside of my turbo was filthy. What I did was disconnect and removed the lower boot off the turbo. I then capped the lower intercooler hose with a baggy and tied it tight. I then used a worn out automotive paint spray gun, filled with laquer thinner set at 30 PSI. Before I sprayed this fluid into the turbo, I used a wooden stick to keep the turbo blades from spinning. After spraying out the turbo, I blew it out with compressed air and I put the truck back together and backed her out of the garage. Once the truck was out, I could not believe how much oil residue was all over the floor. I wonder what my intercooler looks like on the inside??????:confused: :eek: :confused:
 
Any more DIRT.....

On this subject? We've all (many) been running this K&N filter for a long time. I had one on my '99 and now have put one on my '01 and am very concerned about this now. Someone had mentioned the Intercooler being oiled up. How can we get rid of this K&N filter set-up, go to a paper system again but get back to our original CLEAN induction system. Is it going to cause any performance issues if left that way and switch back? Is there a way to Pressure or Flush the induction system?> How about a Fogger spray like when you put your combine away for the year or your sled? What would this do?

You need hi flow. Don't go backward. If you don't see oil or dirt with the white glove inspection, your're induction system should be ok. Just be careful not to over oil the filter and make sure the seal is good. Otherwise go for another type of high flow filter, but don't go backwards!



If you do have oil and dirt in the intercooler, I'd be afraid to do anthing but disassemble the induction system and flush the intercooler, hoses, etc.



I was kidding about spraying a cleaner into the turbo and through the induction system!!!
 
Backwards or to the Shop?

Listen guys, I'm not trying to start trouble and I respect what ever kind of filter you feel works for you. I did what K&N recommended and had the filter in for 40 to 50,000 miles at least, my mistake was not checking the intake on the turbo. I hope in 20,000 miles I'm not going in for a top end job. I am definitely going to a paper filter, I don't care how much efficiency it will cost. Once burned twice shy. I was one of those guys laughing at all those naysayers telling me the K&N lets grime through the filter or stock box or whatever. If the box doesn't work K&N needs to step up to the plate and provide one that does or reconfigure their product to accommodate the stock box sounds simple doesn't it!!!!
