Before I got my gauges I would always idle for approx. 2 minutes after normal driving to hopefully, safely cool down the turbo (read this in archives)

Now that I have gauges, pre-turbo, I notice that I can sometimes get to 250 degrees in less than a minute, so I have been shutting down going by the pyro, and not waiting any longer than it takes to get to 250. No towing... . just everyday driving.

Is this ok, or does more idle time have an effect on preventing coking (sp)??

If your pyrometer gauge is accurate, waiting until your temps. reach 250 degrees F. is more than adequate.

..... still, nothing beats the POST turbo location for safe shutdown temps.

John, John, John... please, please don't bring up the pre/post turbo issue again.

I agree with you by the way... lol

I asked this ? a while back also... . The consensus is too cool down to -400 or so ... allthough 1 member had an interesting post about turbo life if you don't..... something like 300k, if I can remember right... . so ... ... the time you sit there and let it cool down is your decision to make... (I wait till it's at least 375+-)

BTW... can you hook up the Isspro Turbo Timer with guages other than Isspro?

For me there is nothing like having the best of both worlds... pre & post temperature readings. Easily accomplished with only one guage, a switch and two EGT probes. Dave

Just 300 degrees on the EGT gauge and you can shut down. You wont have any problems. I imagaine you could put an oil temp sender in the return oil line from the Turbo. But there is really no need for it, the EGT serves two functions, shutdown temp readings and high EGT readings when towing, etc.

My pyro is post-turbo and i make alot of stops in a day delivering etc... It takes for ever to get from 400 to 300 so half the time im shutting it off at about 375, what is the rec. post turbo shut down?

Sky, high idle at 1200 RPM or so and it will cool off a lot faster than at normal idle speed. I will not shut mine off until I see 300* or less.

I'm with LSMITH on this one. I always let mine get below 300, pre-turbo and try to wait for 250, if time permits. Probably overkill, but it's just all the longer that I get to sit in the truck and hear the mighty Cummins #ad

Sky, are you running the A/C while waiting for the EGT to get to 300? If so, try turning off the A/C and the temps should drop a lot faster.

I find that mine cools to 300 degrees almost instantaneously. No wait required. If I'm towing, I just idle on in to wherever I'm stopping and it's ususally at 300 when I stop. If it isn't, it takes a long time at idle to cool down.

Guages really take all the guess work out. Wouldn't be without them.

I really need to get an EGT temp gauge. This quess work stuff is giving me a hard time. Guessing the proper tourque without a tourque wrench is probably more accurate. I guess I'll do a search to see wich one is best. I've read about one that seemed to be a problem, if I rember correctly. Makes you wonder why none of the Big 3 has them as standard equipment on their diesels. I've been spitting on the outlet of the turbo and counting how long it sizzled before I would shut it off.

I have a dual pre/post egt guage, and since I installed it I have never seen the post-turbo reading be higher than the pre-turbo reading. This is on a completely stock truck doing around-town and interstate driving.

As soon as I come off the pedal, both EGTs start dropping, and the pre- is always hotter than the -post. When I'm cooling down, I shut off at 300* pre, which usually is about 250* post.

jj,

I suspect one of your gauges is not reading correctly. My post turbo reading is always a little higher than the pre turbo during cool down for a while. Try switching thermocouples and see if you get the same results.

I would agree with radixr, I have both pre and post turbo probes, pre always drops faster then post. I have found that you never know when it is going to take 2+ minutes to get post tempature down below 300. That why I put two probes in.

If anyone is looking to install dual Weatach probes and one gauge, take a look at the How to that I wrote up.
