Is this dirt normal for a turbo with 70K miles? Stock Fleetguard air filters and no sign of dirt bypass in the air box.

Is the hole that the red arrow is pointing to for the wastegate and can that be where the dirt is coming from if the wastegate actuator is leaking?

When spinning the turbo by hand (cold) should the it spin very easy and keep spinning or will it have some resistance and stop relatively quickly? Is any resistance a sign of oil coking in the bearings?

Thanks.

I have absolutely no evidence to back this up, but my opinion is that the black stuff is actually powdered metal from the silencer ring moving a bit. Reason being, mine looked like that when I first took the silencer ring off, but now that it's been off a while the turbo is clean.

Also, the intake tube has always been crystal clean, which further leads me to think the silencer ring is the culprit. How long has yours been off?

Interesting theory. The silencer ring was taken out at just before the photos were taken. I’ll have to take a look at it in a couple thousand miles to see if it is cleaner.

I’m going to assume the reason for slight resistance when spinning the impeller by hand is from the seals and not any sign of bearing coking.

Thanks for the answers guys!

Thats normal. I've seen thousands of turbos, and they all look that way. Never really given it alot of thought as to what it is, may be small particles that are too fine to be caught by a filter. It seems to always be more concentrated near the outer edges of the compressor wheel. After many years, you can actually see and feel some slight erosion on the leading edges, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Mine, at 60K miles, and a combination of K&N, BHAF, and Amsoil/Donaldson 4510 filters, was about 1/4 that contaminated. Differences in driving locations and situations will create variations. A cold turbo will provide a small but noticeable resistance to rotation, but spin freely when hot.

Here's a pic of mine at about 40K miles:

And, I don't understand why there would be a wastegate port on the INTAKE side of a turbo - since wastegates operate on pressure?

The compressor blade at 8:00 is dinged a bit. It is hard to tell in the pictures how dirty the intake is. The black on the blades is a small amount of contamination.

Here is the best closeup I got of the blade that was at 8 oclock in the first picture (at 10:00 now). Looks like it has a casting flaw that was probably there from day one.

The oem turbos are not Ball Bearing. There for they will have some resistance, hot or cold with out oil flow. They really need the flowing oil to float on.

Push the shaft up and down and side to side, if the impeller doesn't touch the housing, you are good to go!

my stock 04. 5 has seen 1800 degree and 45+psi of boost and over 120mph and 512hp. stock tolerances at over 100,000 miles. Good oil and good cool down and warm up practices are key.

Or I was lucking and the guy building them didn't have a hangover that day at the holset factory.

;-)

So far I'm having the same luck with the old school PS62 at over 600hp.
