Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) turbo how will i know when it's going bad

truck has 173k on it

You'll hear a grinding sound sort of like a train chugging down the track followed by a bang after a while. then some smoke and then you will have a bad day. check the inlet for oil and see if there is excessive shaft paly on the compressor. Those are definite signs the turbo is going away.

there is no oil but there is some up and down movement

no movement in and out

but it was tight before it went to cummins for service

now it has slight up and play

I guess as long as there is no oil it not a problem

a little play is normal, expecially on a turbo with 173 k on it. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

most of us dislike the K&Ns ,as long as you're getting full boost#s and not over 35psi should be fine.
