The logic that the ECM uses to activate (close) the exhaust brake seems to vary with factors but I don't think the exhaust brake can be closed when the truck is parked, shifter in Park position, and fast idle activated.

The exhaust brake seems to be closed or partially closed at idle, in Park, when the engine is not yet up to operating temperature but once the engine is up to temperature I don't think the exhaust brake can be closed when stopped in Park.

I preferred the old two speed axle switch on the shifter of my '01 Dodge that allowed me, not the ECM, to decide when the exhaust brake was closed.

The majority of the time my truck is idling at Starbucks it is cold, so with it being cold the exhaust brake will activate even with the fast idle activated

With an auto transmission it's also wise to put the foot operated emergency brake on and idle in neutral to keep the transmission from burning itself up due to lack of fluuid circulation. Or did chrysler fix that problem with the 68RFE?

gee sounds like that egr and dpf system is great... . should save fuel, resources, and save all the trees and bugs..... god I love my old 96 and my 02... ... ... ... .....

I tried again when my engine was not yet up to operating temperature. The ECM does not activate the exhaust brake at fast idle on my truck.

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a service manager about this problem. Frankly, everyone who has a 6. 7 will eventually have this problem. It is caused the emission system involving the particular filter, EGR and turbo. The soot will eventually build up and plug up the EGR and build on the turbo. Apparently, Dodge and Cummins are aware of this problem, but do not have a fix. The system isn't working the way they thought. Thats why they tell you not to idle your truck or put any additives in the fuel. This is a major problem that they (Dodge/Cummins) don't know how to address. Also they don't want you driving it around town at slow speed do to the build of soot. The truck is powerful and the transmission if great, but the emission system is the problem. This ill designed system will probably wind up in the courts as a class action.

I am not so sure I would go so far as to say it is an ill designed system. Is it as Maintenance free as earlier trucks? No way. But it meets the requirements mandated by our goverment. As far as the turbo goes... ... ... . no not every truck will need a turbo repair before it is out of warranty. Yes they all will require egr system cleaning at some point. Do not blame Dodge or Cummins... ... ... . blame the law makers that required the diesel to be cleaner than the gassers.

Yep, Why in the hell do they do that to these trucks

The government:

"Lets add all this emissions crap to these trucks to keep the tail pipe clean and in return they will use 30% more fuel"

What a great plan.

The bad fuel economy that plagues vehicles in this country is a tax issue, and should be discussed in the 'politics' forum. ;)

I have a 2008 6. 7 diesel Ram. I have 19000 mile with about 90% pulling. While pulling my 5th wheel, I started hearing a turbo whine. I took it to Chysler deal to Check it out. They said, it was fine. On the way back home, Loud noise started coming from the engine compartment. Started smoking like you can't believe and I lost power. Luckily was was about to get off the busy freeway in San Diego. Truck and Trailer were towed to the same dealership and they said, the turbo blew. The turck is fixed according to Dealer and I have to travel 140 miles to pickup the truck and trailer. They did replace the turbo. I hope this is not going to be a perpetual problem. What an experience my wife and I went through.
